Dell XPS Gen 3

I am picking up one of these boxes soon and I was wondering if anyone here knew muck about it. Its a pretty high grade box. Pentium 4 Extreme with ECC support ddr2 and looks like pcie gen 1.

Can it take a xeon? Thats mostly what I want to know. My precision 670 has the same case setup with the server psu underneath and everything. What I really like about it is that it has a gpu support on it to hold a card up so it doesn't sag. Thats really cool.

So anyone know anything?

if you are indeed running socket 478 for the pentium 4 : http://ark.intel.com/products/27438/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-2_40-GHz-512K-Cache-533-MHz-FSB

this should fit : http://ark.intel.com/products/27222/Intel-Xeon-Processor-LV-2_00-GHz-2M-Cache-667-MHz-FSB

however be advised most are sold in pairs now. it gives you a 1 core bump using 20w less. not bad considering most modern high end Pentiums have the same specs(which can play games) just dont expect a game server.

you should however check your M/B for exact socket size.

lol I actually plan on trying all sorts on it! I have an actual server it I need a lot of game servers or anything like that running. Since I got the OK from the shop owner to have if I'm picking it up later and I'll post what I find on it.It gave me error lights but I am pretty sure it was over the GPU. If it was over Ram I'm not exactly sure what to do about that as I don't have very much* PC2 ram laying around.

*The PC2 I do have is out of a machine that needed ECC. I know the pentium 4 extremes could use ECC and were more than capable after OC'd to 4.2 GHZ.

As for what the machine will be tested to do..... Well I played skyrim on a pentium 4 once. The GPU was not able to run it all too well and I have my choices of what to put in it. Little excited about that. I'm not expecting GTA V or anything but I know I can play CS:GO easily on it. Everyone thinks you need 4 cores for everything nowadays. Little do they know after the micro code patches in 2008 that actually fixed a lot of shit the P4's are useful now. No one wants to use one though ;-;

Also thanks for that cpu link. If its 470 I have the workstation dual xeon version. They literally took the same machine (a Precision 670), put a 1 CPU mobo in it, gave it 4 ram slots instead of 8, and put a P4 in it and colored the case blue. I can swap chihps if it is the same socket :DD

i had to buy a 4 core to run a arma 3 server, even on linux. however for one of my gaming systems i ran a pentuim g3458 or something(forget what it was called) and it ran a large majoriy of games fine. but im content with my main systems 4th gen i7

I either need a new mobo or I can use my 670 as I found out my ml370 has the same ram. I might sell the 370 minus ram for 6-700 as I really can't use it and it takes up a lot of space.

That and the power bill...

If anyone knows where I can find an xps gen 3 pentium 4 motherboard PLEASE let me know. This is the machine I have been looking for as a secondary and I don't think I can game with ECC.

Can I?
