[Solved] Dell PERC H710P Mini(IT Mode) Not Detecting SAS Drives

I have a Dell Poweredge R620 with a Dell PERC H710P mini RAID Controller flashed into IT mode. It wasn’t detecting my SAS drive before or after I flashed the controller, but I tested an SSD in the backplane and it worked. I tried putting the SAS drive into different slots and there was no difference. The SAS drive I have been testing is the HGST 1.2TB 10K(model no. HUC101212CSS600).

Is the SAS drive I have not supported by the controller? Am I doing something else wrong?

BTW: I am a noob when it comes to this enterprise stuff, but I think am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to normal computers

Is that the only SAS drive you have? Does it spin up?

This is a guess, but an educated one: The SAS drives aren’t being recognized because they have special EMC specific firmware on them that the H710P won’t recognize.

I’m semi-proud of myself for actually recalling a random server build blog I read months ago about this:

I don’t see what would be so special about that HGST drive that it wouldn’t at least be recognized.

Older PERC cards blacklisted non-Dell drives, but that was years ago, and that’s with original firmware, not reflashed to IT mode. I’ve had lots of luck using EMC branded 1.6TB HGST SSDs in R720s after changing sector size.

Drives with anything other than 512b sectors won’t work, and probably show with a size of 0, but they should be recognized. You have to reformat them on a non-RAID HBA, but again, IT mode…

Simplest possible answer is that it’s just a dead drive, electronics completely fried.

These drives have EMC part numbers on them, it’s highly likely they are going to have a “customized” firmware that may not play nice with certain sas adapters.

I have a bunch of sas drives (HP’s 791434-002 version of a ST2000NX0273) with a special HP firmware on them that I cannot get my H710 to recognize at all, and I’m positive they are good drives because I can get a generic LSI2008 to recognize them.
I’m not sure how the IT firmware flash factors into this but I wouldn’t put money on the IT firmware fixing the compatibility issue.

I returned that SAS drive now, I’ll see if I can buy another drive. Do you guys have any suggestions for drives?

I ended up just buying a 1TB SSD instead of messing around with SAS drives.
