Solid build. I am not the biggest fan of western digital May I suggest a seagate

Thanks for the feedback. The price on the Seagate is a little more attractive too. Other than price, why to you prefer it to WD? I have heard pretty good things about both.

Over the years I have had lots of WDs crap out on me. Dont get me wrong all Makes of HDDs have drives that fail but I seem to have replaced alot of WDs. Segate used to offer a 5yr warranty as opposed to WDs 1yr But I think that both of these drives have a 2 yr.

Have win 8.1 for sale in my sale thread for $60.

4690k is a great choice, but fx 8350 plus mobo you'll save $100 easily. Money left in the budget can up grade to r9 290 or 4g 770

None the less nice choice.

SAVE THE DOLLARS!!!

Very good build. But, if you wanna save a little money switch to 8gb ram (4x4). 8gb is more than enough for what your doing. You can always add 2 more sticks of 4gb later down the road if need be. Far as hard drives go its hard to say who's the best. Me personally I've had them all fail time to time. From what I've looked up Hitachi in real world tests have been the most reliable. Databases that have thousands of hard drives and are constantly replacing them through the years have found Hitachi drives seem to last the longest and have the least issues compared to Western Digital and Seagate. If your storing very valuable data you could do a raid mirror setup.
Overall very good build.

Good Luck!

Hitachi drives are very good drives. but can be harder to find and can cost a bit more. That said here is a refurbished one. its 3tb !! $99 I usually love refurbished stuff but I have never bought a refurb HDD.

Thanks man, I'll have to take a closer look into going the AMD route and thanks for the heads up on the sale.

I would never buy used/refurbished storage.

Yeah, I had a feeling that I was going a bit overboard with the ram, but I figured that it was in my budget and if I decided to start playing with Ableton again it might be useful and I wouldn't have to upgrade for a while. Where would you be re-purposing the $80 or so that would be saved?

Haha, I've had the opposite.  I've had no problems with my WD drives, but Seagates have had some failures.

Less ram, fx plat form, purchasing my win 8.1 in a box  with productq key bout $200.

Can get 780 or cf 280.

Switched some parts around to get it cheaper without sacrificing quality or performance.

There's now room for a better GPU if you want.

Thanks a lot. In your opinion, should a go for a better gpu? I'm working with two 1080p monitors (obviously will only be using one playing games)--would there be much benefit? Might also be worth mentioning that I am considering adding two more cheap monitors solely for productivity, something very inexpensive and not suited for games.

I would probably just get an R9 280X.  It'll be fine pushing one 1080p monitor for games, and should handle the extra monitors just fine.  However, I am unsure if it supports 4 monitors.  You may have to check up on that.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I have a lot to think about now.

Wait...this is a few dollars more but it's worth the price.

Thanks. This does look like a really solid option too.

It might not be quiet though, as the H100i is much noisier than any noctua cooler, and the fans may be working harder as the R9 290 outputs a lot more heat.  Also, the 330R isn't too well optimized for silence.
