Can't make up my mind about the case and monitor for this video editing build. At least I'm down to looking at two cases. :)
Obviously the R5 would be the quietest and would more than handle this fairly modest build. It's been recommended to me a couple of times and the reviews are great, including the YouTube one from Tek Syndicate. The Kendomen Red was also recommended and looks completely adequate for the task but doesn't have as many reviews, although the ones I've seen look okay. It's also half the price and half the weight and has 5 fans vs 2. I'm planning to put a DVD-RW (rare use, but occasionally) and an all in one card reader (frequent use) in the 5.25" front bays so having a door over them (R5) is kind of a PITA. My current system sits to the right of my monitor (thus the R5 with ability to open the door either way rather than the R4 only opening to the left) so forward facing USB and audio jacks (Kendomen) are easier to see and access than the top mounted ones on the R5. All things being equal, cost and convenience steer me toward the Kendomen. But I don't want to make a mistake if there is some really good reason, for this particular build, I should go with the R5. BTW, my computers are in my home office room, so they are isolated from sleeping, entertainment system, etc.
Can anyone provide some practical wisdom/experience here? Thanks.
BTW, except for the case, monitor and kbd/mouse/headset (which I just put in the build as placeholders), I already have all the other components for this build so they are givens.
Finally got off the fence and bought an R4. It was only $60 after a special deal with free shipping so I couldn't say no. I'll live with the little inconveniences.
The R4 arrived. Holy crap this thing is a monster! It looks like it ought to hold two complete builds inside.
sounds cool.
The Define R4 is a nice case indeed.
maybe you could create a nice build log thread from your build in the buidlog section.
Would be cool to see that.
Just saw your post. Honestly, I would have gone with either the R4 or the R5 because of how quiet the components in the build are. The Hyper 212 is really quiet as is the 960, so a quiet case would make for a nice and quiet build. Solid choice on the R4 for $60. Fractal tends to make rather large cases from what I know. Makes them easy to work in though. I have the Arc mini (r1) and it is really big for a micro ATX case. Easy to work with though. Loads of options for rads too, if that is your kind of thing.
I'll look at the buildlog section to see how a thread is done. It's been about 25 years since I built a system so if I make a thread it will probably be called, "If I can do this then so can you...".

We seem to have a lot of people on the forum who are returning to the pc world. You will likely be in good company.
Sounds cool.
I´m pretty sure its going to be awesome.
Well, no real time for a build log. I had all the pieces so I put it together last night. Boom. Didn't turn it on because I was tired and didn't want to deal with either a crackling noise and the smell of burnt plastic OR playing with all the options in the BIOS, whichever way it went. There's always tomorrow...er, I mean later today.
Wow, no popping noise or burnt plastic smell! Just booted up and let me go into the BIOS. All the drives are listed and everything looks good! Had the covers off to look for initial problems and needed to check that the fans were turning because they were so quiet. All that's left to do is tidy up the cables. Really glad I went with the R4. Thought it was too big at first but after running all those cables and getting my fat fingers in there to screw things down and connect everything to the MOBO, I wouldn't have wanted anything smaller.
