Decent 10gb switching

Why does the 2019 Mikrotik CRS312-4C+8XG-RM have copper pipes & heatsinks, when the 2025 QNAP QSW-M3216R-8S8T has the regular finned heatsinks.

Is new tech the difference?
If you can get either for the same price which would you choose? (neither have POE though)

There is a 8 port 10 SFP+ is inexpensive and passive and do the 10 gbit part. 255€
Mikrotik XRS 309.

Find a 2.5gb PoE with SFP+ uplink. Can likely be done for 120-200$. So that combined with the Mikrotik is likely the cheapest option, if budget & low noise are constratints.

Older but a place to start. STH has a lot of it.

There have been considerable advancements made in 10G PHY’s.
They used to suck down 5W per link, then it was reduced to 3W, AFAIK the latest development has that down to 1.8W.

4 sfp+
8 poe 2.5.
$600.

CRS309-1G-8S+IN?

I have bought a few, they deliver the specs and they’re silent. Lots of features in RouterOS.

Yes, thats the one.

I found a no name brand SFP+ switch for $110. I have been wanting to try. Probably doesn’t have good switching capacity. But it might be fun to play with. Says it uses an RTL9303 chip so it might be decent.

anyone recently researched cheap 10Gb switches ?

this looks to be decent candidate:

  • Mikrotik CRS304-4XG-IN

If you want affordable, do that. 10GBASE-T generates a LOT of heat as is; adding PoE to the mix will likely require a fairly loud actively cooled switch.
