Debian linux only shows localhost, no network printers

hi,

I have a bit of a problem. I am currently trying to connect to a network printer. I do know that there is a printer in the network, but when I go to add printer it shows nothing. When I go to connect to server it only shows the localhost in the drop down menu.
When I scan the network with arp-scan I can find two network printers, but the add printer menu does not show anything. Typing the address manually does not help.

Is there some package that is missing?

kind regards,
oldman

What printer? Brand/Type? you have cups installed? do you know the printers IP? Does it have an ip assigned already?

thanks for the quick reply.
Canon i R2525/2530
I have installed cups.
I do know the ip address(fixed).

The question is why do i find it if I look for it via command line, but not when wanting to add a printer.

what GUI do you use to add the printer? I personally use gnome and when I supply the IP address it finds my HP printer without problem.

I also use use gnome. But I am currently wondering if it even uses CUPS, because most of the other people are on windows.
I installed smb but I do not know how to add an printer via smb, or if smb is even used for this,or how to find out if the printer does use smb.

I have to dig if this model in particular understands any common way to get jobs sent or if it only uses some properitary shit...

In the meanwhile these are the supported Canon printers under debian https://wiki.debian.org/PrinterDriver/Canon/UFR-II

Ok, so it seams it only understands Canon an no other language:

Most Canon MFP's do not have a PCL printing kit installed. This means the print jobs submittted with a PCL driver will not print. U need to download and install the UFR 2 driver.

Gnome uses Cups; the GUI is just on top of it; Though it seems that the linux driver does not know how to talk "Canon"

Can you check if the printer understands postscript?

Found two more resource:

The 2nd link is about canon AIOs and seems to have helped the OP from the first link.

Ok so I got it installed via cups and I did something similar to this.
But now when I try to print the test page, the printer just ignores it. There is also no error I get it just ignores it.

Ok.. i would go and check now if the connection between cups and the printer is beeing established. (wireshark) to make shure the config on the machine is doing what it should... or if the printer is the culprit
