I prefer MATE… Gnome 3 is retarded

i too prefer mating to linux desktop environments

Well here we go again. Arch was getting stale anyways  Any feedback yet on the out of the box KDE experience? Have always been running with gnome on debian but was thinking about switching it up a bit…

Ok, jumped the gun. Since my Arch Install had a seperate home partition, i just reinstalled. Went smooth so far. I stuck to gnome as i’ve had good luck with it under debian.

Now the obligatory debian problem: I’m trying to install evolution-ews. It’s not available for Buster. Both contrib and non-free are enabled. I also tried adding bullseye-backports, but with no luck either. Any tips? The only packages i could find are in sid.
Second, i don’t like firefox-esr. The official instructions for stable firefox are to download the tarball and move it to /opt, which i did. Will firefox handle updates by itself, since apt doesn’t know it even exists…

Edit: Nevermind, i found the Release Notes concerning evolution-ews and the Corresponding CVE. Now trying to figure out how to get it in anyways. Sadly, for Exchange Server, there is no decent alternative to evolution…

Edit Edit: Was able to install evolution-ews from experimental. Certainly not recommended, but it works. A restart later, all my mails are back.

No, you will have to wget the tar and extract it to the /opt/firefox folder. I created a symlink to firefox-esr, which unlink and symlink back after an upgrade. It’s really easy to script out, just have a cron check every two weeks or whatever.

Yeah, i made a .desktop file for firefox stable. So replacing the folder should work without further changes.
Guess i’ll just keep an eye out for newer Versions every now and then. Might sit down at the weekend and make a systemd unit to automate that stuff.

You can mix repos and install software from sid or testing if you need something in particular.

True that. I’ve done so in the past. I wanted to keep this install as clean as possible, so neither testing update nor mixing repos (apart from the needed evolution from experimental).
Though i certainly feel the itch to upgrade gnome to 3.32

you gotta keep updating it

Oh, i did. With KDE, and XMonad, and i3, and Gnome, and awesome, and … After having it installed on my work laptop, it lost a lot of it’s charn. I love it at home, but at work, it’s making me less Productive (personal problem).

In the end, Debian now feels like coming home from a long road trip to Arch. Not exciting or new experiences, but warm and cosy “I know where everything is”.

arch at work user here. so good!

love it to bits. cept i never fixed dpi on external mon. too lazy lol

It seems like they also have the cinnamon desktop fully supported.
So i’m kinda curious how that will work out on debian 10.
Since it did not really work well previously.

The only distro till now that works well with Cinnamon is either Mint,
and i believe the Manjaro spin seems to be reasonable.

Of course there is a Mint Debian edition that works really well with the Cinnamon DE.
But like Debian itself it’s in pretty slow development.

Isn’t Mint Debian edition still on kernel 2.x?

Nope 4.9 i believe.

they must’ve finally released a new version then

Have 3 pc’s and those of my family running fedora, i’m too invested to switch fully. Still might be fun to install it on my server since it would be more set and forget. Also have some quirks on that system annoying me that i haven’t been able to solve.

Tbch I don’t use cinnamon because I do not like gtk3 so while this is a good thing I largely remain unaffected by its development. However I will say they have polished the MATE development more. It still lacks compiz if one intends to use that it will require install. I don’t use it so that’s fine.

Cinnamon is a fine environment the thing is. I think its aim is at users who want a traditional windows like experience.

Anyways as I have gotten more versed in Linux I’m starting to find that I do not mind slow development. Quite frankly despite Fedora being fast and bleeding edge both Fedora and Debian are largely install and forget distributions which is kind of nice. Less time plucking the strings of the OS and more time doing what I want to do

If you find yourself using debian… (@AnotherDev made a convincing argument for me to migrate my parents… Which I did. it went well…)

This was my sources list… Pretty much gets you everything you ever need. I went ahead and made it nice and readable for them should they ever want to learn. I like keeping to this format

My sources list for them is nicely organized

I just made a post on it: Installing Debian [A normal users guidelines episode 0x01]

Just a little follow up:
Firefox did, in fact, update itself today from 64 to 68 on restarting the Browser. So, no need for any fancy scripts or units.
