I agree. Not that I'm a horror fan but pretty much all of scariness of Dead Space comes from monsters being strong and dangerous which doesn't amount to much.
if you expect to be scared then it does sort of diminish the fear
Imagine movie makers/game makers pulling a josh whedon special (e.g cabin in the woods) where the trailers leading up to the launch all made you believe a film was one thing and then you went and experienced something completely different...
e.g trailer makes you think the film is a 'romantic comedy' but instead half way through it turns into a horror movie...
I think that would scare the living shite out of people.
Oh god, I remember one of my favorite YouTubers talked about horror games. Cannot remember which game review, but he mentioned Dead Space "horror."
In Dead Space, something jumps out of the wall, you're getting a shock (almost a heartattack), you kill creature, you calm down, you stomp shit, you carry on until same shit happens again. 2 hours into the game, you already know what to expect when you walk around the corner, or near the vent. You turn off the PC, you go to bed and sleep well. No problem.
Real horror in the gaming industry might not influence you while you're playing the videogame. I will use Dragon Age: Origin as an example... The Darkspawn might not appear as horrific creatures when you're slaying them on the battlefield. However, if you dig into the lore of Dragon Age and think further on what kind of corruption/sickness these creatures are spreading and how they're doing it, things start to get interesting. I won't spoil DA:O for anyone who hasn't been playing the game yet, but the Darkspawn is a great example of the "horde of horror", though they might not appear so ingame.
I watched Helloween4545's LP of that game and I have to say it was an appalling attempt at horror survival. The original was real survival horror. This one looks more like, as Helloween4545 put it, Call of Duty with Necromorphs.
i agreee with this. a game like amnesia is scary, and for good reason.
being the halo nerd i am, im gonna mention the flood. they arent that scary to look at, but if youactually read the story and the lore behind them, its actually pretty terrifying
Since I played the first game I aways had the impression that it's a third person action game with some jump scares. Second game just added insta kills and not much else. After that wasn't interested it the third game.
But even though they advertise it as a horror game it's still a good action game and at least worth the price during a steam sale.
