What also sucks is CDs may be relatively reliable compared to what we are moving to today:

Personally I’m hoping M-DISC and optical drives don’t get completely discontinued.
This whole idea of running a backup system at home across multiple media with refreshing of old data and migrating to new media for the next 30 years, it’s not wrong - but I have not the time or nor energy.
Professionally printed photos have lasted very well for me, as well as laser printed documents. Some of the former did get damaged by mould and condensation 
But even those aren’t totally destroyed.
