DE / AUT - Amazon.de has currently the Moto X 2014 (16GB and 32GB) for ~250€

Amazon.de has currently the Moto X 2014 (so it's the 2nd Gen) in Black and either 16GB or 32GB for around 250€ off contract. The white ones are still ~300€ (and the 16GB version is even more expensive than the 32GB version) but the black version looks like steal.

It's from 2014 but from the specs it still looks capeable.

If you're going to get one I'd recomment the 32GB version since it's not that much more expensive and the Moto X 2014 does NOT have a microSD slot.

Is it possible to use the unlocked version in Slovenia, or is it locked to deutsche carriers?

Here is the white version with the bamboo back cover.

It says it's the off-contract version, so there shouldn't be a carrier-lock.

Check with your provider if all the needed bands are supported. But since it's EU there shouldn't be a problem. Worst case would be you'd have to send it back.

Oh, and you'll need a nano-SIM for it. Many carriers have a so-called "triple"-SIM which means you have all three standard sizes (mini, micro and nano) in one SIM card and push out the size you need. In case you need a bigger size (like going from nano back to micro) you can buy an adapter (just like with microSD cards).

Thanks!

If you really decide to get it, keep in mind: eventhough it still has awesome specs and will receive Android 6.0, it's still a phone from September 2014 and with Google's 18months update policy Android 6.0 might be the last update it officially receives (after that you'll have to hope for custom-roms if you want new features).

That's why i like android. My dad is currently using my old htc sensation with lollipop. ICS was the last and only official update from htc. I kinda look forward to flashing new roms :) My lumia 920 still works, but there are some big software bugs in 8.1 and the app support is horrendous.

Ha! Tell me about it. Just switched back to Android this week after using a Lumia 925 for ~2 years, to a Moto G 3rd Gen (2GB RAM/16GB). The app support is terrible on WP, and so is the lack of some essential features (proper file explorer/manager and the possibility to choose which app to use for opening specific file-types or links). The build quality on the other hand was amazing. Hardware top -> Software crap.

The reason why I didn't buy the Moto X (and I already ordered it but canceled it) are the missing microSD-slot and that I don't want to deal with custom-roms (they are a huge advantage compared to iOS and WP but just not for me).

On my 925 the 16GB storage weren't a problem because there aren't as many apps to take up space. On Android that's a different scenario (the Amazon Kindle app alone is ~170mb big) and I use my phone as an mp3-player at work. It's just a shame that 32GB is the maximum of supported microSD cards in the Moto G 3rd Gen (bigger cards can work but there's no guarantee that they will).

There we go. I just ordered it. 275€ with shipping. Maybe I'll do a little review.

Why is shipping from (I'm assuming, since sometimes I order from Amazon.de and it gets shipped from France or even Spain, most times from Germany and Austria) Germany to you so expensive? ~20€ for shipping is quite expensive, imo (but I'm sued to free shipping because of my nice half-price Prime subscription).

The price of the phone fluctuates all the time. Yesterday i paid 267€ (the bamboo version is a bit more expensive) for the phone and the shipping was 7€.

If the price drops significantly again (let's say during a week or two) you can try and ask Amazon for a refund of the price-difference. I did this a few times now (my Otterbox case dropped in price by almost 11€!) and always got the difference in price back.
But since it's not a policy - simple goodwill, the CAN refuse, especially if a lot of time has passed since you bought it) - so there's not guarantee they will do it. But as long as you're asking politely there shouldn't be a problem (worked for me everytime, once even 2x on the same product because the price dropped again after I asked for a refund of the difference).

Edit: Important note! This does not apply to items that are on sale. Let#s say you buy a pc mouse for 85€ and a week later it's on a lightning sale (Blitzangebot) for 66€ and is cheaper for a set period of time (being the time of the sale), you can't ask for a refund of the 19€. They will only tell you that you can buy the item for the reduced price and send back the one you already have (just check if you can still send it without having to jump through hoops).

I've been using an unlocked 2014 Moto X for about a year, and it's a very nice phone, certainly worth 250 EUR to me for 32 GB. The camera is not great, but fine for this price, and as others have mentioned, update support will most likely dry up soon, so I'd be wary if you are not comfortable with rooting, installing ROMs, and so on.

There have been some insane deals on the 2014 Nexus 6 lately, and it would be a tough call for me. I prefer the form factor and overall feel of the Moto X, but the bigger screen and promise of updates makes the Nexus quite attractive.

Absolutely. The Moto X 32GB 2014 can certainly be considered to be a good "bang for the buck" phone for that price.
Compared to the Moto G 2/16GB 2105 and the Moto X Style/Pure it hits the sweet spot and the only "downside" are the assumable soon end of official updates, lack of microSD slot and the 2300mAh battery (Moto G 2015 -> 2470mAh, Moto X Style -> 3000mAh) but the AMOLED screen allows for better battery performance when you choose a black homescreen wallpaper and with Cyanogenmod you can even make the menues black.
