What is DDoS? How does it work? Why would someone want to DDoS? How would you protect tyourself from a DDoS? Could you please give me a super rundown on what a DDoS is? And no. I don't wan't to know how because I don't want the government breathing down my back 24/7. I was just curious.
Its where another network just kind of throws a lot of data at yours so much that it can not all fit in the bandwidth of your connection basicly clogging it and so the data can not flow properly. For protection dont give out your ip and you can go as far as using a vpn too. There are very detailed articles on DDos and VPN on google that you can read its an interesting topic.
DDos = Distributed Denial of Service.
Denial of service is basically when a server can't provide a service becuase it is swamped. Say if too many users try and access a certain website, it can get overloaded and deny service to new connections as it already has its hands full.
Denial of Service can occur in the wild on websites that dont use a dedicated web cluster to handle alot of traffic. Using a web cluster certain increases the threshold of how many con current connections it takes before the site starts to deny new connections.
A Distributed Denial of Service is usually the name given to the attack. Where overloading a machine is used for mallicous purposes. Basically lots of people (or a distributed program such as the low orbit Ion Cannon) connects to a certain website and start requesting everything and anything. So thus if a normal user comes along they can no longer connect to the website.
DDos can usually cause machines to offline as they overload and reboot. Sometimes this is an inbuilt protection or the machine crashes.
raginghvok says using a VPN will help.... well.... seeing as your traffic is encrypted to another location, the IP you are seen as connecting from will be the VPNs, so if you get DDoS'd the VPN will likely die. However if someone gets hold of you IP, even if you are using a VPN, and you get DDoS'd then your Internet service will die, not the VPNs.
Thanks for the knowledge.
as for how it works DOS is were the attacking computer sends a request to connect to another computer and then it changes its identity, the computer then trys to look and see the attacking computer but it can't find it anymore and simultaniusly the attacking computer sends another request under its new identity. DDOS is where you do the same thing but instead you put your victems identity in and do it to a bunch of computers/servers those machines will then precede to send requests to the victems machine slowing it down in till it is unusable or crashes
but that is just a common form of DDOS, DDOS in its self is just a term for describing multiple machines attacking the same victem with denial of service.
Until a few days ago, I was under a DDoS attack.. Not a massive one, I still had Internet access and I dont have a ton of banwith. but in 2Kbs speed.. I changed my IP address and it's fine now..
