A friend of mine had a external harddrive with a few terabytes of data. It started not to work. I took it apart and plugged it into the hot swap bay. It shows up in disk management but I cant access it. Is there a way to rescue the drive without reformatting?

I would use the command prompt if you can. If that fails, boot up a linux distro and see if you can see it there and backup from there.
Good luck.
