Just bought Dark Souls 3 - first time I've ever played a souls game - just up to first mini boss
Let me get this out of the way before everyone else makes the remark because LOLOMGITSSOFUNNY
"git gud"
At least you haven't been chased off by it's fandom. Personally I'm not really a fan of the dark souls gameplay much to begin with, but I might have been able to grin and bear with it if it wasn't for the community surrounding it. And I'm not alone either :D Yay, look, another fandom has done a good job of making an ass of themselves.
F the fanbase in the A hole...
Now, i would have asked you to compare it to 1, because i love one and dislike all other games from the series (haven't played Demon's Souls). And 3 looks like mash up of DS1 and Bloodborn...
Tips and trucks:
1. Grind whenever you can and wish to. Find yourself a nice spot and grind for a few levels.
2. Take your time. Atleast in DS1 the battle was based on timing, not really on numbers or anything. So take your time, learn patterns and don't rush it. Take it slow.
3. Explore everywhere. The level design in 3 looks like the level design in 1, meaning a lots of tiny secret areas and items and stuff...
4. While you play, turn off your internet connection. F the fanbase in the A-hole...
5. Play 1... God, i can't say how much you miss... Play 1. If you like 3, 1 is the best in the series.
What you need to keep in mind, is that the game is purely timing and precision. Button mashing and luck may bring you to certain place in the game, but from that point, you are expected to have begun to learn to take your time and look for the patterns and openings and everything. The game shows you more, that you think as long as you are looking for it.
Now that was all 1. 1 was brilliant design. What i have seen from 3 so far i am not sure about it. Still, take your time and observe and search everywhere.
Sorry about the long post... I am still young to the souls series, i am still struggling in Blighttown in DS1 and i love it thus far. DS3 will wait for my money.
First of all, welcome to the insanity that is known as Dark Souls!
I absolutely cannot wait to play this installment of the series.
Looks awesome, combining all the best elements of the previous titles.
Also @psycho_666 I personally prefer leaving my connection on due to PRAISE THE SUN! JOLLY COOPERATION!
Although I agree the community can be a bit flippant and overzealous haha, thank god there's no text or voice chat in-game.
One thing you may want to pay attention to is weapon scaling. Weapons have a scale rating from EāS which dictates how well a weapon scales with which state. For some weapons this is obvious such as 2-Handed weapons having good Strength scaling and Rapiers and Daggers, Bows, etc Dexterity scaling but some may not be as obvious, such as weapons with Fire damage scale well with Intelligence and weapons with Lighting damage scale with Faith so if you have a Intelligence/Faith build you can still use melee weapons you just have to find one that scales well for you. On Dark Soul 2 for example, I ran with a Fire Sword and the Moonlight Greatsword because both scaled really well with intelligence and although I was a Sorcerer I could do heavy melee damage to enemies because of the intelligence scaling on my weapons. Because of this system some people even build their entire character around one or two weapons.
I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it - the in game 'tutorial' sucks ass and is basically a list of controls and then tells you to go die till you get it. Still fun though.
Also just if anyone is wondering - I have only had 1 crash after about 4 hours of gaming and it was a driver related crash. I also have 60+ fps at all times playing at 1440p with everything maxed, or 35 fps at 4k, which was a little slow. Thats with a single gtx 980.
The thing about Souls games in general is, that they give you one set of rules, hence the controls, and put you in different situations. This is why there is no tutorial what so ever and you are set free from the outset. They can't tell you how to deal with enemy X, because they already gave you the rules of the game.
Fun fact, in DS1 most enemies attack the same way you would attack if you have the same weapon equipped... So they basically teach you about each weapon while you are set in a different situations according to the rules, presented to you in the first half hour. Almost every attack you see in DS1 you can perform as well. Example - there is a boss, Artorias, who have really awsome attack patterns, really cool jump attacks, etc. Basically if you create and equip his greatsword your heavy attack and two handed heavy attack are replaced with his dash and jump attacks from the boss battle.
The game shows you everything. You just need to look.
If this design philosophy is continued in 3, then the rules of the game should be all right infront of your eyes.
ssh, embrace the memes

Not talking down, just advice for anyone who hasn't played yet. The first mini boss is actually super easy. You don't even have to fight it, you just kite it and it'll roll off the edge, leaving the loot for you without having to lose a single hp.
