I'm terribly sorry if this has been asked before somewhere, but I find little helpful comments via google.
So, on my search to get a decent NAS, I ended up with a system that would cost about 180 euro (240USD). To be precise, the synology DS-213j.
But then I started asking myself, isn't it cheaper to throw some hardware together?
So my question is: What hardware does it take to build a decent NAS? Will all the hassle outweigh the benefits of a system that's very compact, quiet and low powered? Because these features are even the reason for wanting a NAS. Instead of letting my high powered desktop running.
Yes, pisaman2, that's something I'm considering too. Although sometimes I just wish it worked and spare me the headache. Trade-offs... trade-offs...
I guess the easiest way for the software is FreeNAS?
I'm trying to find some small mobo and case. But the eStore I use isn't that grand on the niche hardware. Anyone has any suggestions? mobo/cp, case? Or build your own case? I think I have some PSU lying around I can re-use. I just really don't like the ugly, big, old case we have left over. :s
I threw some hardware together and got at about the same price as the regular NAS: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1VRtS No PSU because I have one lying around. Any comments?
That list to me looks fine and similar to what I used.
Something I almost messed up on, if you are going down the FreeNAS route, whatever you install the OS on won't work for storing other data on, so you may want to bare that in mind.
I just installed FreeNAS onto a memory stick because I was really low on funds at the time. It works, but I'd imagine there are much better ways to do it.
I have been considering running another OS instead recently, probably another linux distribution but that's only because I want to use the hardware for other things. I'd definitly stick with FreeNAS if you want something that works with relative ease.
Yes, I was watching a FreeNAS introduction video, and they did explain this. So just have to pick a thumb drive and plug it in somewhere.
This entire custom NAS thing is really starting to appeal to me. It'll take a little time to order and receive all the components, but the price is just about the same as an off-the-shelf solution. It won't be as small though, going to start roaming the freenas forums to learn more :)
