Custom Intel Build < $900

So this is the build in which I'm purchasing soon,

I just wanted to post it to let other people see what I was going to build and maybe if they wanted to, to take some ideas from my build or maybe build it for themselves!

So I'm not much of a Windows fan anymore. (I have it installed on a secondary drive for work and such.) So AMD Was quite the clear winner as far as GPUs go, even tho NVidia is releasing new drivers for Linux Distrobutions AMD/ATI has still been here quite a bit longer.

So yes, it is actually themed. I'm a bit tired of looking into my Zalman Z11 and seeing a bunch of miscolored cables. But that's just me being fed up with the looks of my rig.

Straight List ($888):

For a bit of added detail to the cables I opted to get some Rosewill extensions (Red) ($22):

To start us off I love Intel, I would have gone with the 2500k if it wasn't for the room with the H60 for cooling and I don't plan on overclocking much on this build itself. So I decided to go with the 3570k, I have a couple of buds down the road that just love it and sing praises all day because it's not as bad as some people say (We do use Water/Liquid cooling on all of our builds so that is mainly why). But I am open to discussion about it :D

When it comes down to the Motherboard, Its amazing. I know quite a few people don't lie ASRock for various reasons, but so far. I haven't had a single DOA or Bad Purchase from them. That is just me tho. Not to mention the RAM, I've seen a friend do this with another (ASUS V Extreme) build and it just looks amazing. Not to mention the case being quiet and the 7850 completementing it all, I think this build will look amazing. (I do have my side panel off quite a bit)

PLEASE DO NOTE: I do have an SSD laying around for me to drag into this build, I didn't include the SSD Price but you can easily pickup a good SSD on Newegg for  < $80 if you're going for storage as well as boot capabilities. A simple boot, is really cheap now.

ALSO:  I am going to install Linux from a flash drive, I didn't add the CD/DVD Drive because well, why waste $20? AND I do connect via hardwire so if wireless is something you want, you can look for a good N Card yourselves :P

Besides all of that, I hope you guys like what I have put together. I'm open to reading what you guys have to say, all said and done I hope you guys have a good day.

Erm... well... I wasn't gonna comment because of your this seems more like a toy build than a performance build but...... fuck it.

If this build is not primarily for gaming, then just ignore this post.

Soooooo..... Just gonna bite into this. You can get a much more powerful system for the same price, I'll just break it down:

  • You don't need 16GB of memory, 8GB will do you just fine, I know your trying a red/black thing, but the board is black anyways, just go with the red memory
  • As a general rule, you don't want to spend more than 10% of your budget on a case, you'll want to go for airflow, not to mention it doesn't exactly jive with your black/red theme (IMO)
  • At the $650 price point I often recommend the HD7870, so at the $900 price point a HD7850 is mighty unbalanced, you should have AT LEAST a HD7870 in here, if not a 7950 or 7970
  • If you really want to pay for modular, then go ahead, but please use a better brand than OCZ. Also you don't really need 600W, you could do 500W just fine, unless you want to Xfire, then I'd suggest about 700W (for HD79XX). And don't expect that rebate to come through, so far I'm 0 in 4 with OCZ rebates.
  • If you're gonna get the H60, I'd recommend bumping up to the H80, notably better performance for only a few $ more. There are also more powerful options in that price point as well.

As a last note, use PCPartPicker so you can get a more balanced price among all the retailers, will probably drop your overall cost by like $20-$80.

Yeah you should explain what you're going to use this for. Since you're going linux there's going to be limited games you can play, so do you need such a powerful GPU? Have you googled the distro you intend on using and the videocard to check for driver compatability? (Check power saving features work, CCC, general stuff, just research) Do you need that much ram? Could you save money and spend more on the PSU, maybe for a corsair or seasonic model?

I'm quite into Linux Mint right now but I need most all of this for my project. I know that some of the ends are a bit odd on eachother but it is very much spent to what I look to use. As a developer, RAM is just, nice. I know I don't need much more tha 8GB at the moment but I have the money and I like the idea of being able to keep the computer in usage for a bit more. I'm actually working on a custom 3D Game Engine myself for personal usage with a small indie developer group I'm in. I know its actually quite a bit overboard for all of this but I'd rather keep it the way it is. (I don't plan on upgrading this build, just keeping it the way it is for now.) But thank you, you have gotten me to look at other models of PSUs :D

The 7850 is good for me, thank you for the concern but I'm personally attracted to the parts in which I have picked (Yes I am changing the PSU to a different brand) I have had experience with most all of the parts in which I'm purchasing (Except for the PSU and GPU) and they are attractive to me.

Thanks for the reccommendations but my gut is telling me I'll be fine. If not, you were right.

Hmm, well, do as you will, you're just not gonna get the performance you could out of it for that money.

Might I suggest not taking this approach with your doctor if you find yourself with a potentially terminal illness?

Just a suggestion ;)
