Curved Displays and other display tech

What do you guys think about the recent trends in display tech and especially the new curved TVs and smartphones that are just now hitting the market? Do you feel that these displays have a place in the market or do you feel they are just another fad and will be gone in a couple of years also are there any new displays/display tech that have caught your eye and or interest you. Also what do you think about flexible displays

I don't really see the point.

Any potential benefits are not worth it.

fad

Curved displays could be sort of useful.  Think about how you arrange your triple monitor set up.  If you were able to replace those 3 monitors with a single 5760x1080 screen, you'd want it to be curved somewhat, just for optimal viewing.

Flexible screens however, I think would be very useful.  A smart phone that can fold up would be infinitely more pocketable than a current 4 or 5 inch smartphone.  That way you can have a large screen and not have to feel like you have a brick in your pocket.

flexible screens already exist, but they are not quite there yet when it comes to durability and wear and tear. Back in 2006 i played with a phone concept which was a pen like object that has a screen retracting out of it.

People really can abuse the hell out of things, and the only way to account for it is to make them a lot stronger and tougher.

Curved displays are nothing new, Both NEC and Ostendo have tried selling them. And now it's Samsung's turn. They are a fad just like RGBY displays. Flexible displays however are not a fad. Having a wrist band that is just a screen would be useful or a TV that retracts like a movie screen would be awesome.

I know they exist.  Flexible AMOLED for example.  However, to this point, no flexible screen flip smart phone has released on the US market (or any market I'm aware of).  The only thing we've seen so far are concepts, such as the pen-like device you mentioned (which I actually remember seeing at Yanko or some place years back).

Not interested, unless it's like a roll-out projector canvas.

Making a ridiculously large screen possible without the usual beamer drawbacks or the transportation difficulties of large packaging required for large rigid screens.

However I recon that video glasses will outperform screens long before flexible screens become relevant. So my guess is: it's going to be too little too late.
