Cruddy resolutions

For everyone.

why do we not have mighty resolution televisions? I have a 1080p five inch display on my phone, but my 60 inch tv is at the same resolution. Is the tv stuck in the dark ages as far as resolution goes?

Also, why does 1366x768 exist?

Well you sit farther away from a TV, so pixel density isn't as important.

And as for 1366x768, probably as a way to reduce costs.

Probably because of a couple reasons

  • Until you get to huge screens, 1080p compared to something like 1440p at average TV viewing distance isn't all that noticeable.
  • Higher resolutions are more expensive
  • Higher resolutions aren't as widely supported
  • 1080p isn't really all that old
  • New phones come out very, very frequently, but televisions don't
  • People tend to hold on to their televisions much longer than other devices, making higher resolutions worthless for a much larger portion of the market

1366x768 exists because it became common industry-wide, is cheap, and is sufficient for most users.

I remember when the local news channels switched to HD from 480i/p. It was a big deal in my area because people were freaking out thinking that their televisions wouldn't be able to handle it or whatever. That was less that ten years ago, probably closer to seven or less.

Ah thank you. I did not consider the life cycle factor.
