Creating XP virtual machine

I am trying to create a windows XP vm from an old harddrive which is using IDE/PATA.

What software and steps do I need to take to create an ISO file from this secondary harddrive?

Hi there,

Im guessing you are using the Hdd as a second one in adition to your desktop. What you can Do is download windows XP mode from microsoft, here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002

Then follow the instructions on how to set it up, here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

When you install it you will be able to select the HDD you want it on.  You probably need to do partitions before on the drive.

Best of luck

Correct the XP hdd is the second drive and had to be pulled from its former shell has it did not want to live.

I have already created a copy on my desktop and an external copy for the owner. But I would like a VM to be made from the slave drive that can run in VM player.

I will follow the links you have provided, and thanks for the reply.

right, so you want the slave drive to run a virtual machine right? Im guessing you have to have an OS on the second drive then run the VM. Other wise try programs like sanbox where you dont have to install anything.

Windows XP mode is not supported for windows 8.

Have you checked any of the alternatives for using a VM?  Like sandboxie?

Sandboxie is neat, but I am unsure how I am to take an old harddrive and turn it into an ISO to be used for VMplayer.

I could use sandboxie to look through the old harddrive as I know it will have bad stuff on it. But I have already let the hdd run and have scanned it.

I would imagine if you wanted a VM experience through windows like you said, you would need to install windows 7 onto that old drive then run windows xp mode on there. Im sure you already know but its possible for viruses to go onto your primary OS even though your on a virtual machine. Not common though.

My machine is windows 8.1. The XP harddrive was pulled from a dell that is not working correctly. What I would like to do is make that old XP into a vm so I can give it to the owners so they can find their pictures and stuff much more easily.

I would make an iso, but from googling I could not find a way to make an iso unless the XP machine could be turn on and done through itself. But like I said it has no will to live. My computer can use the harddrive, and I already have copied the XP harddrive and copied to an external.

Also I already 'installed' the harddrive. Foolish, but I will scan my computer and anything bad happens will just reinstall windows.

My pc is windows 8.1 (the one in my inventory on this site).

The dell had XP and not worth troubleshooting unless really only needed to. I would like to make a vm and take it back to the owner has they gave me three computers. Two were easy as they were vista (one didnt even have a harddrive, which was the one with the good powersupply) and just copied and pasted the user onto my external.

By making an XP vm I can give them the vm and they can copy and paste what they need without mucking around the copied /C: path and getting confused.

Also I felt like making a VM from an old harddrive to learn somethings, but only things I have found while googling is to make an ISO file while the XP machine is turned on, and that is not happening. The XP image could also be really messed up as I scanned it and got two things from Avast scan.
