I have an ASUS P6T v1 Motherboard with an Intel i7-920 CPU (2.67GHz)
The motherboards will support an i7-970 and I can pick up one of these (3.2 GHz) refurbished for ~$500.
Is it worth doing that, or is there a better option for a socket 1366 motherboard?
If you are happy with the performance just stick with what you have as its still a pretty powerful cpu. If you are looking to upgrade for like $500 look at getting a new motherboard and a i7 4770.
Agreed.
You still have a very good CPU and if you are just gaming I'd stick with it.
But if you do want to upgrade I'd go with a newer platform. An i7-4770 and a new 1150 motherboard would perform better than the 970 and cost about the same.
Thanks for the advice (both of you)
I use my machine for games, as a media server and as a dev machine. It's running okay but getting to the point that an upgrade soon will help.
I'll look into an 1150 with a 4770.
