CPU temps spiking over 95c with heavy load in less then 30 sec

I have a i7-4770k with stock heat sink and fan  and I was doing a couple of stress test and it came out to be this - cpu temps are spiking and reaching over 95c in 30 seconds and i am not able to run prime 95 because of same reason . I tried replacing my thermal paste but that didn't have any significant change . What shall I DO NOW ?

IS THIS THING NORMAL ??

Are you overclocking at all, and did you seat the cpu cooler correctly and tightly? Also, are you placing the thermal paste in the size of a pea?

I am running it at stock frequency and I did apply thermal paste in the size of a pea and I did place the CPU tightly .... I did all this just 3-4 days back

It could be just the fact that you got a bad sample from the initial haswell release. Intel had done a bad job at applying thermal paste under the IHS. Perhaps if you are willing you could delid the IHS from the chip and apply a specialized thermal compound to the CPU die and reseat the CPU with the IHS.

did you manually set the cpu voltage or is it set to adaptive if it isnt set manually the motherboard will keep adding voltage under programs like prime95

Is that the only solution ? I haven't done this before and this seems like a thing that requires a lot of hand craft and experience .

No I haven't set the CPU voltages manually and its in adaptive mode ( I am using z87 oc formula ac motherboard and not using any over clocking tweaks and settings all are disabled ) . Also I have tried disabling the turbo boost and setting the CPU voltage manually at 1.15V and still this thing happens.

THats not normal, RMA that cpu.

I just had a long conversation with Intel customer service and they were kind enough to say that they would replace but they will have it checked and then if they found any problem then they will replace it . This is where it concerns me are these guys good enough to test these defective processors or just they have some sort of software that just gives a green light and red light and people over there just judge by that ?

Nonono , the fan is not seated properly , I had this with an i5 , you need to replace thermal paste and re-tighten the fan .

It's because only one part of the CPU is probably covered in thermal paste .

That's the problem with stock coolers , getting them on tight and having enough thermal paste on the first parts you tightened .

i assume that intels technicians are capable to test those cpu´s properly yes.

The thermal paste was spread fine over the CPU(i can say this because i have removed it for sending it for an replacement.) As per my knowledge  the pan clips were tight enough .

Not that this is a must, not by any means, but I own one and highly recommend one compared to a stock Intel CPU cooler. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009VCAJ7W/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF... They are relatively inexpensive and do wonders for your CPU temps. Hope your RMA works out so that they replace your CPU. Best of luck!

Is liquid cooling essential for running i7-4770k at 4.4 GHz ? and thanks for the suggestion. After i get my CPU replaced I might change the cooling unit as well ..... so any suggestion

Not essential but Haswell has a reputation for running hot while OC'd. IF you are considering liquid cooling I can not suggest the H100i enough. A little overkill for your situation, but you would never have to worry about your temps :)

you dont need LC for haswell realy, aircooling will work just fine.

Still 95C on stock is not normal, even with the stock cooler.

What i think is that Intel screwed up on the TiM between the Die and IHS and therefore your CPU is overheating.

This is not acceptable and ofc and should be RMAed

I have sent my CPU for replacement and lets just hope for best ......
