I want to overclock an a10-6800k, and I've been looking Xigmatek dark knight hawk night black night hawk black knight heatsink. Is there anythink else I can get for less that would give me a bit more performance at a bit less price?
Dark Knight is a good cooler. CM hyper 212 is worth considering, it's not better, but it will be sufficient for your A10.
even at an extreme overclock? i.e. as freaking close to five ghz as I can get it?
Dark Knight would be your best bet.
Tho Dark Knight is going to handle 5gHz, what are you talking about?!? Maybe, maybe a Phanteks PH-TC14PE with 3x Noctua NF-A14s would keep you under 85 C running P95, but I doubt it, because those APUs run hot, and need a lot of voltage.
how about closed loop liquid coolers
No. I don't recommend using CLC. You'd have to spend $100+ to get one with reasonable performance, and it's just not worth spending that on an A10.
I LOVE how you NEVER reccomend ANYTHING other than that Phanteks dude. Fan boy? (pun intended).
ok. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lndswgG1Np1qch7pn.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/okay%2520face&h=239&w=251&sz=16&tbnid=SlgPpGZVFtU0fM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=95&zoom=1&usg=__VKpyHpX0fdgSiqLXK08zdWxnGvk=&docid=IGUwLDkKbC9EbM&sa=X&ei=AZ7hUdTzE8PmygH8xICoAQ&ved=0CDgQ9QEwAQ&dur=194
You only really need to spend $20-35, and you should be able to reach 4.5. That's still dependent on things, like the silicon lottery, or ambient temps. Don't get a cooler that is worth as much as the chip.
Unless he doesn't really care about the price? Then I would say go with the Kraken X60, AMAZING performance, destroys ANY air cooler out there.

Benchmarks speak for themselves. Even the mighty Phanteks is just KILLED by the Kraken!
Because it's the highest performing air cooler, and can be had for a reasonable price. The way I see it, is if you want to about 4.8gHz, get a Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Silverarrow Extreme, or Noctua NH-D14. Past 4.8 to about 5.4 on the upper end, go for high-end custom watercooling. Anything past that, LN2 or phase changer.
Rather spend the money on a GPU that beats the A10 lol.
Yeah. In all honesty, with no disrespect to OP, the top-of-the-line A10 is equivalent to about a 7750, which can be had for much less than a Kraken X60.
That's your opinion.
Personally I HATE an aircooler because it just blows hot air around inside my case. With my Kraken I can exhaust everything out the top, ideal.
I understand your intense distaste for Closed Loop systems, but you are rather unbalanced in your approach to recommendation. Why is a closed loop such a bad option if it meets someones "needs" and price range? Maybe people don't want to fuss over the set up of a custom loop?
You're rather militant in your crusade to spread the gospel of the Phanteks dude, gets old.
Not talking about prices dudes! Talking about raw performance! LOLZ
Jelly?
I think in terms of price to performance, Brennan is correct. I will admit that the Kraken x60 is hard to beat. However, the Phanteks, or equivalent air coolers, can almost match Kraken for half the price.
Not only that, but the Kraken is incredibly close to the price of custom loop kits.
Fact of the matter is, CLC can be beat at each and every price point. If the Kraken X60 could be bought for $10, everyone would have a X60.
thermaltake's NiC5 is better than the Dark Knight, just came out, and is the same price
That thing looks really nice! How's the performance? Just trying to find some benchmarks.
Not really. If you see the post I made in a reply above, I still think the Kraken is a horrendous decision. Should have had the balls to go custom, man. It's not too difficult.
