CPU & GPU upgrade query

Hi All,

My current system specs are:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Gigabyte Aorus Elite X570 AM4 Motherboard
  • Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz 16 GB DDR4 (soon to be 32gb)
  • Gigabyte 1070 Ti Gaming 8gb
  • Samsung 1TB M2 & some other SSD’s for storage
  • 750W EVGA G2 PSU
  • Fractal Design Meshify C
  • Dell 27" 144hz Monitor

I am looking to upgrade the CPU & GPU.
Would there be any issues with upgrading to:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D or
  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
  • 7800 XT or 7900 XT?

I mainly use this PC for gaming @1440p (BG3, GTA, RDR2, Forza, Civ5, Cyberpunk)

According to pc-builds(.com) A Ryzen 7 5800X3D would cause a 26% bottleneck with a 7900 XT (@1440p) but i am not sure that’s the case?

Appreciate any feedback!

Something always causes a bottleneck. CPU, GPU, RAM, monitor, eyes … everything has limits and you are bumping against at least one of them at any given moment. Forget about that.

With the games you listed I would drop in the 5800X3D first and see what happens. I am running that chip myself and I am very pleased with it. (other specs 4x8GB 3200 CL14, 6950XT, on X470)

If you can find a good deal on a new 6800XT then that might be a nice, balanced place to stop for that machine. It seems like the 7800XT is barely faster and the 6000 generation is basically what the consoles are based on, so support is pretty much guaranteed for quite a while.

That is essentially what I did and I’m pretty happy with my rig.

With your current motherboard i would suggest to upgrade to the 5800X3D.
That particular cpu is best cpu in regards to gaming for the am4 platform.

The gpu i would say go with the 7800XT or a 6800XT if you could find a better deal on that.
Then you will have a pretty nice and balanced 1440p gaming setup.
The 7700XT from it´s current price point is not really worth it.

Many thanks for your replies!

looks like I will go with the 5800X3D.

regarding 6800XT vs 7800XT the pricing here is so similar that its just worth paying that little bit more for the 7800XT.

the 7900XT is just not worth at the pricing right now but given that I can buy the CPU now and install it and perhaps in the next 3 months when AMD brings the prices down I will evaluate again between 7800 & 7900

The funny thing in regards to those two cards is that they are pretty much trading blows in gaming.
In some specific titles sometimes the 6800XT performs slightly better then the 7800XT.
And other titles they trade blows or the 7800XT is better sometimes.

You could check out some reviews and benchmarks on the 7800XT cards from reputable sources.
Hardware unboxed for example did some pretty good testing.
But also of course Gamers Nexus and our own channel Level1techs are good sources.

Yeah basically these are the 3 channels i watch
And thanks for the extra information!

Yeah Hardware unboxed did a very good review on the 7800XT cards.
And they also included the direct competition numbers from the 6800XT.
And also Nvidia´s priced competition.

I actually see higher tier model 6950XTs, like XFX Merc, for the same price as lower end XFX Swift 7800XT, at least in Europe. It may be worth a look.

And yeah, 5800X3D is awesome.
