CPU bottleneck with passthrough

Hey all,

I am considering upgrading my system. I have an i5-7400, RX580 and an Asus Prime B250M-A motherboard. I would really like to passthrough my GPU to a Windows VM as I still game with friends and chat over Xbox application (they have Xboxes). If I upgraded my GPU, would my CPU be a bottleneck? I only occasionally game on Rocket League right now, but I plan to leverage some of my new free time exploring new titles.

Thanks for the response! I considered a new CPU with the same socket ago, but I forgot about that dream. Good idea. In this case, I am honestly considering building completely new and repurposing this for my living room.

I have a 1440p, 144hz monitor I got cheap a while back so of course I’ve never been able to utilize that fully. I guess it’s time. Now I need to figure out what exactly, so I’ll probably create another dedicated post for that. Need to do a bit of research on the latest Intel and AMD CPUs.

If you’re using pass through/VFIO I’d personally have to recommend AMD over Intel as working with big and little cores isn’t ideal for using pass through. AMD is simple to use as they are all “performance” cores and it’s easy to just give the VM one CCD and the host another if you’re looking at the x900X or x950X series of AMD.

Oh really? Well, that makes everything a bit easier then. I’ve got no tie to Intel… So it looks like I need to do a bit of AM5 research
