Could any monitor support Freesync?

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while but Im finally posting a thread about it. With there now being some non korean 40 inch 4k monitors that unfortunately dont support freesync I've been wondering if it would be possible to get Freesync on those as its integrated into displayport. I think with one of the korean monitors wendell got freesync through a firmware update so could this be possible for other monitors as well (maybe if theyve got the same controller and/or panel? > Is this completely ridiculous or plausible?

free-sync also works over hdmi now btw

in any case, ya I think it would technically be possible to run it on nearly anything

Damn, freesync over hdmi is here already? Then it should really work on any monitor (i might just see if i could get it to work on mine) . Do you happen to know what the hardware requirement for freesync is (other than having an amd card)?

More than an year actually... There are a plethora of a monitors, that support it, on very reasonable prices actually. 24" IPS freesync 75hz 1080p for 150-170€ is about as well as any other 24" IPS monitor...

Is that thing available anywhere else yet?

I would think any display should be able to use free sync with a firmware update as every display has control over refresh rate.

As FreeSync is a software feature technically requiring no additional hardware, yes any monitor can support it. But, FreeSync does require the display controller to do some work and as such it will not play as nicely as possible on low-cost or low-performance display controllers. That is why there is a problem with some FreeSync monitors not having as wide of range as their G-Sync counterparts. G-Sync is a hardware thing where the Nvidia proprietary hardware handles the refresh rate controlling and frame syncing, and it is built to be able to cover as wide of range as the panel can physically handle. Not all display controllers that are put in monitors can say the same, whether that be a limitation on the high or low end of the HZ range.

IDK... All I know is, there is also 20€ cheaper 22" and 10€ more expensive 24" variant. And a 27" option I haven't seen yet...
PS: Found the 24"...

Eh. maybe rather go 144hz TN for that price point, or get the way cheaper 75Hz TN one at least when it's $120, AOC makes those ones, the 144hz TN panel actually looks pretty damned good for TN

I looked at those... They look nice, but where I am, those are way more expensive than this one. And this one is weirdly cheaper here... Like the FSP power supplies... They are also cheaper than most other brands here...

FSP seems to be maybe 50/50 on quality

and if pricing is like that there then ya should be really solid

Wow, did you got the currency right? Where did you find those prices? My is starting to slowly but surely die so if you remember or have links to a monitor in that price range with Freesync I'd really appreciate that.
I already checked out the amazon link you provided but that monitor is 210$ not €. Thanks (:

You see the 24" LG 24MP68VQ-P for 313 local, that is 156,5€...
On the lower left you see the 23" variant for 302 local currency, which is exactly 151€...
I live in Bulgaria, that is eastern Europe, part of EU...
The 22" is 274 local, meaning 137€...
For some reason those models are way more expensive in US... On the other hand the RX480 is about 280 up to 350€ here, so it's one for the other I guess...

That's a pretty big deal for me considering I can only get HDR support with my R9 290x through converting its DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0a. Now, on top of that I get FreeSync as well. That's pretty sweet.

Seems doubtful though that someone is going to make a monitor that supports free-sync and HDR

Give it a year. Things are in motion right now.

Personally I have my two 1080p, (not to shitty) TN, 144Hz, flicker free, freesync panels and I won't change those for a while.

Consoles and even movies are starting to adapt HDR, it's bit over pessimistic to say HDR and FreeSync with the same monitor won't exists.

AMD has a list on their website, I'm sure its not everything but take a look.
