Core temps 30c higher than CPU temp

Stock clock on a 4790k
EK Supremacy Waterblock
360mm rad 30mm thick

Temps shoot up and drop almost immediately after starting/stopping prime95. Doesn't seem normal. Should I try to reseat my waterblock?

Don't use Prime95. Prime95 overvolts your cpu and is not considered a good stress-test anymore. Retest with AIDA64 or another modern stress-test.

Y U DO DIS?? such a waste imo (but i assume you are planning to OC... I hope) but yea, retest with AIDA64 for accurate results.

Had it at 4.6 but took it back down to stock when Prime95 put it to over 90c. My butthole clenched real hard when it went from 34c to 90c in about 5 seconds. AIDA looking good so far. chilling around 47-53c.

Yeah never use Prime95. Its been universally proven to overvolt modern cpu's far above what they're meant to take or will experience in day to day use.

Mellowed out around 60c... thanks for the help guys. Figured it wasn't my installation.... Now to see what happens at 4.4.

Really it's my own fault for not being read-up on stress testing software. Haven't worried about overclocking in a minute. Thanks for the help.

I was typing something about prime95 vs aida64 and OCCT with modern cpu's but thecaveman beat me to it. So i will just give an answer Regarding the rapid temp spike up and drop down. As far as i know it is normal for haswell.

Yes Intel does spike up quickly but it doesn't normally hit the thermal threshold (unless you overvolt it obviously, which is the primary concern with Prime95 comared to AIDA64).
