I'm trying to find some good cheap games that we can play together. something like coop or mmo. she's never really gamed much and doesnt like "serious" games. she liked mario and donkey kong while growing up. how do i get her accustomed to the current generation of games and make this a good bonding experience? any suggestions on games we can play together?
I'd like to suggest portal 2. That is probably one of my favorite coop games. I will also suggest borderlands 2, but I'm not sure if you consider that as being "serious" or not. It is a fps, but it definitely is one of those games that doesn't takes itself seriously.
Goat simulator on the new update.
i have both. she also doesnt like "disturbing" games so i think borderlands might be out haha.
Trine 2 on PC. Requires a second controller to play coop.
torchlight 2? not as disturbing as diablo or path of exile i guess
you could also try a single player game but play it together by making decisions / taking turns
plot driven games like:
the walking dead, the wolf among us, the banner saga
If she liked those kind of games, than don't force something new on her unles she gets interested in it by watching you. I'd suggest you buy her Wii U, Super Mario 3d World and Donkey Kong Country its great for casual gamers, and even hardcore ones, also get yourself The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD :D.
That is what Nintendo is for after all, family fun.
EDIT: I misread "cheap", if you can afford get used Wii and super mario bros, if not, good coop games I can think of atm for pc that she might like: Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends, Trine, Portal 2, Worms reloaded and Guild Wars 2.
Awesome. Great advice. I'd rather not buy a console. She has a decent computer for gaming
I don't have to do some research right now as I'm going to bed, but I'll take a look as soon as I can get back to you with what I find, also knowing what she likes would help a lot.
Also, it may not be relevant since she's already acustomed to gaming, but I though i'd share this video, you might learn something from it that will help you in with this situation:

Jazz Jackrabit 2, Trine 2, PS1/PS2 games.
Trine 2, Dungeon Defenders, Terraria, and Guns of Icarus.
Terraria, Trine 2, Magicka, Orcs Must Die! 2 and maybe Awesomenauts.
My ex-girlfriend got into gaming by accident after seeing our mutual friend play Simpsons: Hit 'n Run on the original xbox. She ended up glued to the front of the TV for 2 hours and giggling her ass off. My xbox was long gone, so we loaned my friends xbox and she ended completing the game.
Looking back, I think there's some several reasons why she got into the game so much. 1. Familiar characters and world 2. It was funny and 3. It was funny to fail in that game, instead of it being frustrating.
So ideally, I'd suggest finding something along those lines. Also, I second (or third, whatever) the Trine 2 suggestion. Octodad and goat simulator both seem good ones too!
