Considering building a NAS/server for the hell of it

Hi all:

I've been pondering putting together a server as of late, primarily for small things like file storage, email, Minecraft server, etc. I was also contemplating running virtual machines of off it (but I can already do that with my desktop). However, my 5mbps upload is kind of counterproductive to this whole server thing. Wondering if anyone has any ideas of what I should do as far as servers go. I'm also wondering what other things I could do with it. I don't really have a limit as far as hardware cost. Probably going to wait until Ryzen is out. Suggestions?

With 5 mbps you could stream music, and maybe stream video to your phone. I would give plex a shot. Also I really like owncloud. I use it a lot instead of dropbox, and google drive.
