Connecting To The Internet

Hi

My pc is about 25m away from the router and i get 13mbps- i have an external network adaptor

The dads pc is closer to the router and he gets 46mbps- he has ethernet cable

When i recently downloaded civ 5, again, it took 3 hours    :C

i have a budget of 50 £ and i need to get better internet

should i buy some ethernet cable- but have them trailing all over the house

or should i buy some powerline adaptors- we have them in the uk, they send the ethernet cable signal through the houses electrical wiring

Thanks

I am in the same boat. I went to pc world and bought a wireless extender from linksy for £50 but it 1/2 the speed but at least it reaches my room. I think I need to upgrade my wifi card. For you if I would get the cable if it isnt too much of a problem. I would do that but my house is much too big and the cable is too far away to do it.  :/.

So, you're using what?  A usb wireless adapter then?  Personally, I'd run ethernet.  Through the basement, under the carpet, in the attic etc if you don't have the capability to run it through the walls.  That will give you the best performance.

That said, upgrading to a modern PCI wireless adapter will likely give you a better connection than what you are currently using and, as such, net you some extra speed...  depending on your router.  For example, if you're running a 54g router, your top wireless speeds are likely going to be in the 15-20 megabit range, which you are already pretty close to.  If it's N, then you can probably get close to what your dad sees on his wired connection.

So, yeah.  If your router is running G, I'd go with a wired connection.  If it's N or better, then you can likely peg your internet connection more or less with a wireless adapter upgrade, so that's probably the path of least resistance.

This needs to be moved to the networking hardware forum.

From what I read, I would highly recommend going with a Ethernet cable. Wifi is very nice to have, but the signal can be degraded with the material the radio waves have to go through and the distance as well; of which you did mention very nicely.

Thanks Guys

Im gonna go with the Ethernet Cables

Doesn't get any better than cables. Make sure you get Cat6a so it'll be compatible with 10 GigE in the future. It's not much more expensive than Cat5e and futureproof.
