Connecting reverse sas to sata breakout cable from motherboard to sas expander

Would the connection work to connect the motherboard to a sas expander to get me more sata ports without using any pcie lanes and not affecting the c state (to save power)? I am effectively looking to use it as a better sata expander. Would this work? Would it require the motherboard to support an special functions?

I was pretty sure an expander, required a SAS card, but not tested.

Reverse breakouts do for sure work on non-expanding backplanes though, that one I have tested.

SAS or SATA? You said SAS ports but reference SAS so I wasn’t sure

If SATA, all bets are off

The host (motherboard) has 4 sata ports and i want to convert them into sas to use with a sas expander.

Sadly impossible

SAS can do SATA, but SATA can’t do SAS
