The alignment isn’t exactly perfect, but it’ll do.
I’ll have tp likely redrill a few mounting holes to stuff in some self threading inserts, then put some standoffs on those.

Interesting… will look forward to seeing photos as your build progresses. Also be curious to know what the thermals look like in your DIY “box kit” when finished.
Is the wood, gonna get stain / lacquering, before going ham with components?
Just a few (unpopular?) thoughts and these are just my (paranoid?) opinions so may not be true at all…
Wood is highly flammable, at least compared to steel. Yes I know that temperatures will not be high enough for it to catch fire, but it will sit there, gathering dust and that will probably be fine too. But if something goes wrong, you get a short and a cable melting or VRM burning up you may end up with a clusterfuck on your hands.
You are mounting your MB directly to wood? OK, fine, the power supply is grounded, but those do connect to grounded metal case in a normal PC
If you treat the wood with something, make sure it’s not giving off toxic/flammable fumes when it heats up
I love DIY!
Make sure it is well ventilated and make sure no sawdust remain to mess up your case/cpu fan.
Do post a final picture. Pls consider using varnish instead of paint to preserve the character of your build.
One day I’ll build a computer in a wooden case just so that during high load or gaming the room would smell that idyllic country fragrance of birch firewood.
I mean for that you could do what cheap wines do and just throw some bits of wood in the case as is to get the smell. Put them on the GPU… Should be fine… Should be. . .
You can actually lightly char the wood with a torch and then clean it off with a brush. This is what homesteaders do in fire country to the outside of their cabins and it makes it so that the wood is much harder to ignite than if untreated. Personally I like the aesthetic it creates, but in this case it wouldn’t matter since it’s inside a drawer.
Not connecting the grounding plane won’t stop the PC from safely operating, but in the event of a short there’s an increased risk for unnecessary damage. If it were me, I would find a donor case with the right size MB mounts, cut out the panel, and then connect it to the PSU housing with a grounding strap.
This is probably the best advice in this thread so far because it’s not as obvious as others. Don’t take your lungs or overall health for granted.
That sounds awesome, I need to get me a torch and a brush!
My jank ass PSU has a GND cable thingy that i’ll figure out a place for
Note the bottom section is meant for the PSU
Stupid 2mm plastic insert on DRAM (RGB on other models) causes incompatibility with heatsink. Nice
If anyone wants the RAM feel free for a DM
So the above shows me trying to stuff some RAM into my board:
[Board B550i Aorus]
[RAM: Ballistix DDR4 16GB - Micron Rev.E (Great casual overclockers) ]
[Cooler: Alphenhorn Black ridge]
And yeah, so the max supported RAM height for the cooler is 33mm, not the 35mm of the sticks I have there. They’re 2mm too tall because of a plastic insert needed for RGB models.
Fuck RGB
So I ordered myself new, lower profile sticks and they’ll come soon, so I can at least boot the system uninstalled.
I don’t know. I considered it. I might want to go with something a bit more neutral.
So I’ll now basically have 4x8GB of DRAM but only 2 slots to shove them in.
Hmmmm.
Alternatively, I’d be happy to do a swap for the 4x8GB with 2x16GB sticks (Low Profile) if anyone wants to.
Note thew 2 pairs of DIMM’s are Ballistix and Ballistix sport respectively.
Both Micron Rev.E. Both 3200 CL16
So shouldn’t have too much compatibility issues.
BTW. Am in UK
Can look up mfrs [the likes of Minwax], if you feel like giving lil’ punch to presentation
No matter what takes place, give the case plenty of room to air out, before setting up the rig
Will look into such an option. Thanks
Also I guess I’ll have to remove the wooden shim in the case lol. It was there to try and get the spine piece perfectly upright, but it’s still a bit slanted.
Should be fine.
Given the cost of computer cases these days (and availability of some), who could blame you?
Did you make papyrus for the printer?
printer? where?!
Lol. I did a little CAD desgin for the case when I noticed a board pf plywood hanging out in the garage.
So after getting it cut out at uni, me and dad took turns holding the pieces down and jigsawing them to cut out the holes or straighten the edges.
Then we drilled screws in to put it together.
Was a fun day!
As for my printer… it’s a cheap Canon MG3650. And I shudder to think how much money in total I’ve wasted on ink cartridges over the years. I only recently learnt about ink refills. SO MUCH CHEAPER.
Build works and boots up
Although my display looks glitchy AF
Likely to do with the fact that. I’m using an r5 240 I got for like £10. Possibly a bit dodgy lol.
(And yes, I am only really using that for a display out right now)
All I need to do now is actually purchase a bunch of standoffs, threaded inserts and screws. Oh and eventually get round to getting a PCIe riser for an eventual actual GPU.
I might have to do the varnish and system install once I come back from uni haha
I should probably send pictures of the full case lol
