Computer Upgrade

Was not sure where I should of posted this but I am curious of updates I could do for my current build. I am seeking for a boost of FPS but while maintaining a semi small budget on it.

120fps/120Hz or faster loading is a nice upgrade but is not my current focus.

I am not listing a budget as I want list of things I could change or upgrade.

What kind of video cards are good upgrade?

Is there anything else that can be upgraded too?

What about my i5 Processor?

Can / will upgrade keep this build competitive / same to next gen consoles?

here is my current specs:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium  (wont be upgrading to win8 even if theres a FPS boost)

System Manufacturer ASUSTeK Computer INC.

System Model CG5275

System Type x64-based PC

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz, 3201 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

GeForce GTX 470

1TB Hard drive

1080p Monitor

Games I currently play and want to see approvement in

ARMA 2/3 - having poor FPS on low settings (I really want a improvement in this game where I can have better settings yet manage 60 fps

Skyrim - semi mix of low and mod with playable FPS

BF3 30-40 fps at low settings

the best upgrade for you would be a cpu and gpu upgrade some good ones are the i5 4670k and the FX 8350 and the R9 280x is probably the best deal

AMD Radeon R9 280x is surprisingly a big boost (cording to gpuboss) iI have been looking at Nvidia cards mostly but I don't have a preference but Nivida has been the cards I been using for a time.

However I am not sure which card is better or would do great for what I need.

as for CPU upgrades I am not really good with and would have to seek outside help to get a cpu updated... however a video card can easlly be installed by me.

I am looking to boost my fps as much as I can with around $500-700 maybe a little above, frames per second are my focus on this current rig.

If I upgrade to Radeon R9 280X and the Core i5 4670K

(235 + 310 = around $545)

How much of a boost of FPS and power would I get with this change?

and thanks ragingh4vok for replying, I am doing research but I am still a idiot at pc building...

I am also looking for something to keep the internals cool, it tends to get hot in there!

(this rig was built slightly bad)

For under $700 This is the best upgrade I could get.

  • FX 8350 performs equal to or better to the 4670k in most newer games
  • R9 280X is generally amazing
  • M5A99X PRO R2.0 allows you to crossfire another 280X in the future to get even better performance
  • SeaSonnic 850W PSU as to let you crossfire/upgrade in the future (it's also on sale right now and this is a bargain for the product). I didn't know if you actually needed a better PSU or not but I included one anyway as both the FX 8350 and the 280X suck up a LOT of power.

Expect to see Maximum settings at around 60FPS with this machine.

i5 has better single core pref, but overall FX has better performance with all cores used so says cpu boss.

I never installed a core let alone a whole motherboard, will be even more stress and would need help. failing is a risk I wish to to take too much but yet have a great improvement. also my motherboard wont work for MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card? or the AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor?

R9 280X looks good.

I have a CoolMax V-600 140mm a 600W PSU with cooling fan on it, not sure getting the SeaSonnic will be needed off the bat will it?

I shall however keep it saved and get it should I decide to crossfire

as for your maximum settings around 60fps what kind of game where you referencing?

Also how do I give you case size so I can make sure motherboard and gpu would fit?

Don't upgrade just for ARMA 3, you can get bad FPS on a great PC due to poor optimization, as well as server hardware in MP, and poorly optimized missions.

 I think a 280x with an 8350/4670k would be a decent upgrade.

Well I am not just updating for arma 3

Skyrim at super low settings 29 fps

arma 3 low settings / map and missions dependant can be 10 to 25 fps

arma 2 low settings is about the same as arma 3

Bf3 low settings on small maps get 15 - 40 fps, map dependant

I plan to play/run things like star citizen, and watch_dogs. they both looks demanding and likely are going to be hard to play on my current rig specially Star citizen. as well the many games in the future with higher specs because of the new gen consoles will be pushing the graphical bar will result more games being more shiny.

------------------------

MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card vs ...

AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor vs Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

I am wondering if any of these listed upgrades will work with my 600w PSU, I think they will.

If I want to improve more I could then get a

Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard with the second MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card and that will need the SeaSonic M12II 850W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

---------------------

I am curious on CPU boss ( Intel Core i5-650 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor my current core) vs AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor says its not too much of a upgrade. (for its auto generated comparisons)

How much of a AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ( $184.99 ) core upgrade will do to the rig alone?

MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB Video Card ($297.99) is nice price but I would be willing to shell out a little more, what would be best next step up from R9 280X?

-------

What been asking about these upgrades are is how much they improve from my current hardware?

What would each hardware would percentage of performance / fps would they give to my current rig?

Will like a new GPU give 50% increase

Will the new CPU give 20% increase

and what about the motherboard, how does it help besides allowing crossfire?
