Computer turns itself off?

Ok, So, Yesterday my pc started turning itself off as if I were pressing the power button.  Hard reset I think is the technical term.  So I changed plugs, thinking maybe it wasn't getting enough juice.  Well that worked for a few hours.

So I'm really just wondering if anyone else has had this problem before and if so what was the problem/solution.

I'm thinking maybe something is overheating ...(didn't run hwmonitor today since it didn't do it for awhile.  I will do that as soon as I can get to stay on again.)

Or my PSU is dying.

My system specs are....

CPU: Phenom II X4 965 running stock cooler

Motherboard: AsRock 970 Extreme 4

Memory: Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2x4GB) @ 1333 mhz

HDD: 2 Western Digital Blue 1 TB dirves

GPU: XFX 7850 Core Edition

PSU: Rosewill Capstone 650 M 80+ Gold

5 case fans: 2 top intake, 1 rear exhaust, 1 front intake, 1 side panel intake

If any other info is needed let me know.

Based on what is going on right now, I would say your CPU is overheating, try removing the old thermal paste and apply new thermal paste

Download OCCT and run some cpu and gpu tests to see what temps you are getting on a load. This also could be a problem with a dead bios battery (settings gone wild) just go to your bios and check if your temperature settings are correct (keep in mind that you might not find those settings because your motherboard doesn't have them)

AND ill say what has been said for a million times: More info plz... when does the computer power off, playing a game, watching a video, idling etc...

whoa, what's with everyone's system spontaneously turning off? or is this a repost?

Mostly when I'm surfing the web using Chrome..  I played a game yesterday morning .. left it on .. went to work .. came home a few hours later .. noticed icons in the taskbar for programs I kill when I start the pc (logitech webcam, Kodak printer junkware, and Overwolf for teamspeak which is the newest and in my opinion probably the cause, uninstalled so we will see.)

Surfed the web for hours then it reset it self I said to myself "that explains the programs I killed earlier".  So then after that I watched netflix without problems. Then did some more web surfing .. reset again .. back to netflix for awhile then another reset during it. At this point I got pretty ill (pissed off) and just powered it off and went to bed.  Then today I was just reading forum posts here and it did it. That's when I decided I would see if anyone else has ever had this problem before.

Not a repost from me.... who else had this problem and when?

Downloaded OCCT, Here are the results.

It ran for 3 minutes and 9 seconds. I set the max value to shutoff at 65 since CPU-world.com says 55C - 62C is the max. Room temp was around 24C.

Also, i don't how this thing works but i have never seen the CPU go over 50 C even while gaming for hours.  So if it's hitting 65 in less than an hour I'd say that's too much of a full load.  Room temp was around 24C.

mine shut down yesterday :D, was just a case of temps, cleared out dust covers and cleaned the CPU cooler and its been working fine since.

Was running at around 70 degrees under load...now at 50 from a simple fan cleaning exercise :D (idles at 22-25)

3 minutes is not a test run it for atlest 30mins i run system stress  testing for a minimum of 6hrs.

Then there's this. No idea how to use this program.  I did notice that my fans never sped up.. Hitting 62C you would think they would be screaming. Room Temp was around 23C during this one.

Have you actually cleaned the fans out and the heatsink?

I just cleaned mine around 2 weeks ago it was the first time since I built it a few months ago (6 months?). I was expecting alot of dust but there wasn't much.  But I'm going to check my bios settings since in the post below this one I didn't hear my fan speed increase.  Which is odd, or atleast seems to be.

My reply to your first post answers that.

But i'm curious. What processor do you have?

FX 6300 with a stock cooler. Pretty similar t junction of 65-70 degrees.

EDIT: Id also get MSi after burner or something that can show you CPU and GPU temperatures in an overlay whilst your in a game, what these guys are saying works but it take time and is annoying :P

Just get the overlay up, get in a game that you usually play and watch the temps and wait for the restart, youl see the temps and should get a ruff idea whats happening (also think it shows fans speeds too. If it gets to hot then theres a cooling issue, if not it could be a power supply issue (i dunno how good roswill PSU's are)

The temps look fine. The next part to figure out is the PSU overheating? if it isn't then check to see if something is shorting out. If nothing is shorting out, then the PSU might be going bad. Try running your system completely maxed out

Ok, so I've played path of Exile for 2 hours,  CPU hit 55C and GPU hit 67C. Room temp 23.5C. So really not that bad.

So far it's been 5+ hours since the last incident.  I did do a few things 1) disconnected a monitor 2) deleted a program 3) changed power options.  I'll leave the pc on tonight and if it doesn't reset it self in the middle of the night I'll start changing things back to the way it was and see if I cant find the culprit.  But so far I"m pretty sure it's not heat.

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.

yeah do them one at a time and see if one trips the same issue, process of elimination time :D

Also if it does reset during the night, check the windows logs and see if anything was logged that caused the RR.

Here's this. Like I said previously I have no idea how to use this program. but my guess is the power supply tab would put a full load for testing the power supply?  Any who as you can see ran that test for over an hour.  I'll try and connect the other monitor later and run another test. if this is the right test.

Oh room temp was 23C at the start and 21.5C when I stopped it.

I hope you do press the big green "ON" button to start the test. usually 1h is enough for small diagnostics, but just to be safe i run it for 3-6h (leave it overnight or when you are at work/school/uni.) When test finishes or errors out, OCCT produces nice graphs and autosaves them somewhere either in "my documents" or "my pictures".

I've had duel monitors running all day and gamed about 5 hours straight without a problem ....

Now I shall mess with the power options again... cross your fingers.

Pretty sure this was the culprit....
