Computer Shutting Down - Advice Appreciated

Hi!

Apologies for the long post but Ive been having some issues with my rig and cant seem to figure out the issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

About a month ago I purchased a 6 GPU Ether mining rig (parts listed below). I’ve been encountering a problem where the rig continues to shut down after running for 72+ hours when running with all 6 cards.

Initially I was under the impression that the power supply was the problem. Originally I had a 700w PSU supplying power to the Motherboard and 4 GPUs and a 500w PSU supplying power to the other 2 GPUs. I figured the computer was shutting down because of power supply issues so I bought another PSU and hooked up 3 GPUS to each 700w PSU. It ran stable for a few days but I encountered the same issue.

Next, I figured the motherboard was not capable of handling 6 GPUs so I took off the 6th card and ran with 5 for about a week. Claymore kind of froze after running for 72 hours but I just needed to refresh the mining pool (the rig remained on and didn’t shut down which I thought was a good sign).

About 96 hours after refreshing the pool the rig completely shut down. By “completely shut down” I mean that all of the cards stopped running and the display stopped working but the motherboard still seemed to be on and the CPU fan was still running. Why would this be the case? When the rig shut off when running for about a week with 5 GPUs that kind of threw out my theory that the motherboard couldn’t handle running with 6 GPUs for more than a few days.

The only other issue I could think of is that maybe it is because the cards are overheating? A few of the RX 480s are running at around 90° which I thought was quite high but I read on some of the forums that this is not unusual for these cards and shouldn’t be much of an issue.

I’m kind of at a loss for where to go from here and how to debug. Is it possible that the MoBo is just shot? Maybe it is because the cards are running extremely hot and shut down after a few days? Or is there another possibility that I haven’t thought of?

Thanks for taking the time to read through this. Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!

Ok one thing I have to say is running these at around 90 degrees Celsius is damn hot compared to what I am seeing said around the net. Also in regards to that PSU the CX series is the lower end side of the Corsair PSUs so check the PSUs to see if anything is faulty with them. Use a multimeter for this. Also what is the case you are using? Check to see if the fans are operational / running properly. Make sure you have things set for proper airflow throughout your pc. Also is anything overlcocked in any way? Dial things back and see what happens.

You don’t have access to any error logs? No Windows asking you if you want to boot it safe mode after this crash happen? If you buy HWMonitor Pro you can monitor your rig remotely with your Android phone so that might be a good idea.

Have you tried keeping on the system idling for more than 72Hrs to see what happens?

Might be driver issues. When you say shut down do you mean an actual shut down (fans off, nothing happening) or the OS just crashes?

It is possible it’s power related too. had my PC shut down randomly too. turns out the wall power was garbage and buying a good UPS fixed that. Even lower end branded PSU’s are fairly reliable to I’d put my bets on drivers or wall power related issues.

As MetalizeYourBrain said, try idling first, then slowly add 1 GPU every few days and continue mining.

to clarify is this linux or windows?

The 480 can be quite problematic when it comes to heat distribution. I had simaler problems with a Gigabyte RX480 Gaming Edition. The PC would shut down when the temps hit 100c. I could only imagine this being the culprit in your system.

My only solution was to download MSi Afterburner and adjust GPU fan speeds in that to compensate for the over heating issue.

But in this case, you are running three RX480’s… which is a little different. You are also using these for bitcoin mining, is your system running in an open air environment, or is it closed in a PC case? You might want to look at your cooling there in general.

You may also want to download HWmonitor .
