What is the original file format?  And video/audio codecs? And what other programs have you tried besides  freemake video converter?

its an uncompressed fraps recording .avi video file, i've also tryed compressing it with Virutal Dub, Sony Veags,Adobe premiere and a few other free coverters/compressers  i found online some wouldn't open it but the ones that do as soon as they get to 66%/67% the whole computer locks up no matter what program i try it with. It only does it when trying to compress the video everything else is fine

hmmmm... if sony vegas and premiere did it, it may be the file, or it may be drivers... make sure that opencl is enabled in the codec settings for vegas

I guess the file could be corrupted? I have personally never recorded with fraps myself.  You could try Tencoder. I use it mostly for FLV files, And its converted FLV files that were corrupted, Ones that would not show a length in a video player or let you skip through them.
