Computer issues

I'm new and wasn't quite sure where to post/ask this on the forum but I need help. Everytime I start up a game my computer shuts off and then my H100i goes from it's normal white LED to a blinking amber one. I could really use some help here and I've looked online to no avail. Thanks in advance.

Here are my specs if anybody needs them:

CPU: AMD FX8350

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5

GPU: Diamond HD 7750

RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 4gb x 4 2133mhz

PSU: Rosewill RV2-500 500w

I had a problem like this once where I would start up BLR and then after a while of playing my computer would shut off. I ended up coming to the conclusion that my GPU was trying to draw too much power and would shut off. I cannot remember if my GPU was overclocked but you could look into that. I think the screen would shut down and I could still hear the game or the whole computer would shut down or the screen would go black no sound/response but it would still be "on".

I was thinking that might be what's going on or my power supply is faulty and having issues. I'm still trying to figure it out though.

What are your temperatures?

Everything is running around 30-40c.

What is your PSU?

lol it is at the bottom of the op. Not familiar with rosewill, heard mixed opinions.

Looks like a dual rail psu, maybe starlight has everything on one rail and is tripping it. Been a while since I personally had a black screen, was usually an issue with heat for me.

It's a Rosewill Value 2 500 watt. I posted it at the bottom of the OP

Can you elaborate a bit on what you said about the rails and what not. I'm not too enlightened on PSUs.

Took me a minute to find it, this is the best explanation out there. I don't know what your PC power draw is, but that could be why you are black screening.

That sounds like a good explanation for why my computer is turning off. How would I go about fixing this though?

It looks like the maximum load pulled down by your GPU is 55 watts while your PSU can only supply 240 watts on a single rail. If as I suspect from some quick research the PCIe Power is on the same rail and the 24pin main and 4 pin CPU power cables, then it is possible you are overdrawing that rail.

The best solution is to replace your PSU with one with a single 12V Rail. There are a lot out there. It is easy to check. just check the output specs. (on the box or the page) If there is more than one "@12V entry it has more than one 12V Rail.

Here's a good one;

IMHO you should not be skimping on the PSU. Since it's stability and lifetime often determines that of the rest of the system, it should really be the last place to try to save a buck. But most people assume all PSUs are equal except for that one big number and screw themselves.

That is not to say you can't find deals. I picked up a bunch of single 12V rail, 80PLUS Gold, Antecs from MicroCenter for $45 a pop last year and I have been installing them in new and respawned PCs all over the place. Sadly, those prices seem to be a thing of the past right now.

I think you guys might be overlooking something, here, is he OCed and how far. If he is pushing his 8350 hard enough and the gpu hard enough he could be pulling more than the 500w psu can handle period.

Even if the psu could punch above its weight when it was new does not mean that as the components degrade that it would not start having trouble, assuming this build has some time on it.

I have all of my stuff running at the normal clock speeds. So that's probably not the case.

Even at normal clock speed the 8350 can pull 140 Watts at load, plugging your listed parts into http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine yields a recommended 253 Watts.

It is not uncommon for low price point PSUs with multiple 12V rails to split them into PCIe/CPU/Board and SATA/MOLEX to account for users in that price point loading up on the SATA/MOLEX side (especially with the power draw of HDDs)

what you are describing is most likely a psu problem, So I am willing to bet it a issue with the psu either not being able to supply enough wattage or its overloading one of the rails.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll look into replacing the PSU based on what you guys told me. Do any of you recommend anything in specific?

I leave for a few days and all this happens. Not sure if you're still monitoring this issue starlight, but any seasonic or corsair PSU with a single 12v rail is the way to go.

+1 I've had really good luck with SeaSonics PSU's they are excellent quality.

I would be a little weary of Corsair's cheapo CX series PSUs however. I love Corsairs stuff especially their 80+ gold PSUs but I've "worn out" a couple CX500's in a years time.

Either way make sure your getting something thats 80plus certified, It really does make a difference.
