Compression
guys...
i am confused. I just downloaded a 50mb .rar file and when unpacked it's 4gb, how the fuck??? and how do i do the same thing to send files?
Probably a lot of empty space in whatever the files are. How small you can compress something depends on what that file is.
Easy enough
1 ) Put the files in a .rar .
2 ) Take the HDD out of the PC.
3 ) Grab a hammer.
4 ) Keep hitting the hard drive until it's completely flat.
The .rar should be a lot smaller than before.
The follow explains how file compression works pretty well:
As to how you do the same thing. I'll have to investigate it when I get home from work. Then I would be able to tell you how you can do it.
well you're probably right but i think it was some sophisticated compression. Basically it re-textures my game, new textures and what not. you can download it if you want and see for yourself. 50 mb download size... when uncompressed 4 GB
Thank you for this link. somehow after all these years dealing with unzipping and unraring i never bothered to learn more about compression, it went over my head. It's pretty insane how the uncompressed file is identical to the original. I should really study more on this since you got me interested.
If it's uncompressed image files then those are pretty compressible. It's like the difference between bitmap and png or whatever.
Could be some crazy compression method, did it take a long time to extract? like a lot longer than copying a 4gb file would take? I've seen game rips which are a fraction of the size but would take half an hour or so to extract. But if it's a rar file then it's probably just whatever compression method rar uses.
Rar is rar is rar. Theres no crazy compression, its a 20 year old format. If it really did decompress 50mb to 4gb then the files probably have massive amounts of information thats very similar to each other.
What file was it?
Game texture mod i think. Can i put this post on pause until i find the file?
Or just .txt with 1000 0 in them packed into a rar. Copied a bit (maybe 10 times) packed into a rar.
That is how I used to build "zip bombs" that were like 10MB packed but 2GB unpacked.
