Community Photo Assignments - April 2017

PHOTO ASSIGNMENTS - LEVEL1

Every month, people like yourself will have the opportunity to train and challenge your eye with some photography. I will pick a prompt (usually a word or phrase provided from the community; something to theme an image) and you can go out there with your camera to see what you can capture with that phrase in mind!

April's theme is "YESTERDAY." Interpret it as you wish! If people may not be able to figure out the connection between your photo and the theme, it might be a good idea to leave a one-to-two sentence description.

Rules:

  • Please keep it to one photo. Spend time and effort picking your favorite.
  • Photos must be your own, and taken WITHIN the timeline of the challenge. No, you cannot use work you've previously shot.
  • Keep it SFW.
  • Use of something outside of a DSLR is allowed.
  • Do not provide criticism unless the artist asks for it.
  • Have fun. :slight_smile:

I personally share photos on Flickr and 500px - it is a decent resource for sharing photos that are capable of retaining some quality and sharing meta data. Make sure you read their ToS before committing to a platform. Speaking of which...

Legal jargon provided by forum overlords:

Summary

  • All submitted images are submitted with creative commons license, no commercial use outside of L1T without prior consent of the author, attribution mandatory; [this is in the site ToS already but just a reminder]
  • All submitted images come with the guarantee of the submitting user that he owns all the rights to those images and is fully qualified to license those images as aforementioned;
  • The submitted images will not interfere with rights of third persons, meaning no people will be photographed without a model release permitting publication under the conditions set forth here;
  • In countries where applicable, the submitted images will not interfere with rights in res of third persons, meaning the rights of the image of objects belonging to persons in countries that protect the right to an image of those objects (e.g. France, but also some publicly accessible musea - in Anglo-American countries - for instance). The submitting user is liable for checking and/or clearing these rights prior to submitting;
  • The submitted images will not contain derogatory or offensive content in any way;
  • The submitted images will not contain private information of third persons, and will not contain data that could be abused, like for instance software keys, confidential technical data, etc;

PLOT!

Oh, never mind that's not allowed.....

Could go with "yesterday" as a word.

Yesterday seem simple enough. Waiting for a confirmation.

I'm in!

Just seeing if we get any other suggestions - "Yesterday" seems like a decent prompt, though. :)

Sounds good. I'll give it a go, if I get the chance.

If we get a few pictures in, we will have more months to fill with themes. Yesterday is fine for now.
We can make a suggestion thread for that.

I like this idea. I even like the word suggested for the first assignment.

Used to have a photography group that did this. Loved it. Would absolutely be a part of this.

Think we'll go with "Yesterday." :slight_smile: I'll update the post with rules and guidelines tonight/tomorrow.

Im in also.

OP is updated - please read up on the rules and legal info, and have at it. :slight_smile:

I can break out the old DSLR. Have a couple locations that I went to yesterday that would make good photographs.

Great job with that. Thank you.
This line specifically is a good call I think.

I still have two suggestions:

Personally I feel it weakens the whole "photo assignment" aspect if you can write your story right next to it. I would much more prefer if it is only the photo. .. uhm, "one shot, one opportunity" sort of. No text with it at all, not even a title. If the image can not transport the massage on it's own, it should not be put in a themed photo assignment. Does that make it more challenging? Yes, of course. But that is the point of a photo assignment, to challenge yourself.

Secondly I would get rid of the "encourage DSLR camera" point. A tool is a tool is a tool. DSLR, phone, mirrorless, webcam, point&shoot compact or 8x10, whatever. If anything I would say it makes it even more impressive if you can take a great photo on a potato camera.

One more thing: since we don't have a photo yet in the contest, let's rename this here to "Photo Assignments - Discussion" or something and make a new topic just for the pictures.

What do you think?

While I see what you're saying - there's reasons why artists have statements besides their work in galleries or comments on a Flickr post - sometimes it is never just that easy. :slight_smile: This allows people to be a little more creative and not be so literal with the challenge, and will help the viewers understand.

People can post in here, toward the end of the month I'll re-link all the images in the original post and lock it at the end of the month. In every new assignment I post, I'll reference the collection in a hyper link. For now, this is fine for the number of people we have involved.

Seeing that we only recently moved past a very snowy Winter, I chose this little puddle above Catherine Creek in Oregon. I hike this area frequently, and it seems like just yesterday it was completely covered in snow. In fact, up above this area there are still some stubborn patches of snow still clinging on.

Keep in mind that I am very rusty and was never really a fantastic photographer.

Raw camera image (just shrunk a bit for the forum). I suppose if you aren't super techy yesterday might need some explanation maybe.
