Since I know everyone here just loves comcast (sarcasm), I figure I'd share this hilarious little story that happened with comcast the other day. I originally shared on reddit and then torrentfreak did a nice little news article which I'll link here:
Thought its unlikly anything would come from it. Please keep in mind that you are specifically saying someone actually did download that torrent. You maybe don't want to do that
cable one has done this countless times to me and nothing has ever come of it. I just tell them, "oh I dont know sir must be a neighbor kid has the password again... I will change it."
First step: Read up on what you have to do when you recieve such a letter, I mean in the legal terms. I can't speak for the US, but in Germany recieving a similar letter from a lawyer always warrants a response in some kind. Not doing anything is the worst reaction in that case (again, speaking for Germany).
Oh, I've dealt with comcast before, and I know other people that have dealt with comcast as well (minus the million leters). And as I mentioned, I'm really not concerned at all. Unless the copyright holder files for a settlement claim (which they didn't, it would've already happened by now), comcast isn't going to do anything. And even if they hypothetically did file a settlement claim, they can be fought fairly easily.
Well, if you use a VPN, then the one that would've gotten caught would be the VPN IP, and if you use a VPN that doesn't use logs (of which there are many), they can't trace it back to your real IP.
I've had them complain about me torrenting a linux iso and free videos given out by torrent before.
FYI as the account holder, YOU are responsible legally for all activity on it, so you are admitting to it... I would suggest talking to a lawyer just in case, maybe get one on retainer.
A bit late, but for anyone concerned that comcast would care even though I (or anyone else) would blatantly admit guilt, here's a conversation showing just how much they don't care:
