So basically 1tb data caps are rolling out for Comcast users and here is how Comcast explains it. https://youtu.be/CE9OuNK-QWg
LOL! No wonder the comments are disabled. Might get a worse like/dislike ratio than the Infinite Warfare reveal....
I got a 560MB GIF here...
The amount of bullshit and null terms in that video is too damn high!
TL:DW for that video:
I get 2 TB with my provider and have never even came close to 1 TB a month.
I still gave them an earful when I signed up and every time I have to call I ask them when they're getting rid of it. They're rolling out gigabit in a few areas around us and that has unlimited so that's their scapegoat now. Caps are so stupid.
Watched long enough to thumbs down that turd.
If I had to redownload my steam library it would go past the cap (1.4 TiB). Then I'd have to wait a month.
Does this only affect non-business class internet? I work for a company that caters to residencies, 500+ students. Pretty sure it would hit the cap within a week.
What the hell did I just watch?
Why so bullshit?
Yeah I noticed this the other day too, its BS. I'm trying to run my business at home, and they pretty much want a business line.
I don't even see how this is legal, but they control everything in the business so...
I have to get my wsus server for updates setup here, I probably should have already done that anyways. If I have to do reloads or a bunch of builds I don't want to get close to the cap. My use last month was 757GB, between my steam games, reloading my personal machine, and building at least 10 machines for customers. I also probably did 30+ repairs last month. Almost every machine I service ends up needing updates.
They're trying way too hard to tell me that the cap is ok.
Sure... I'm not likely to exceed it TODAY.... but what about tomorrow?
I lived in Cleveland when Cox was doing "trials" of this last year.... I knew this was coming. The 1TB data cap only applies if you get the Cox top tier Ultimate internet package. Which is like 300Mbps. For the 30-50Mbps packages that most people have, I believe the caps were around 300GB.
But it gets better from there.... They charge you (per 10GB) for going over your data cap rather than just cutting the service. ;)
We have soft caps here. They just take the latency from 20ms to 150 once you hit 1tb.
I'm not sure how they can justify caps really.
Network infrastructure doesn't have an overhead for continuous use aside from routine maintenance, in a similar way to sewer systems. It may have an overall simultaneous capacity, but there isn't a limit to how "long" it can handle that limit for.
Of course this won't change the mind of these companies as they are just out to make money by whatever means they can. They already charge too much and some are provably criminal, but the same as the banks you can't fight them because they're critical infrastructure providers.
I guess the one good thing is that the cap has been increased. I don't condone data caps on landline services, but 1TB is a lot of data, possibly enough for most consumers and undoubtedly a lot more than they allowed before.
My ISP doesn't have a cap as far as I know (UK), but the most I've downloaded in a month was about 3.3TB (which was exceptional).
I think this was said on an old Tek at some point, but the point stands and I buy it. The caps aren't there to make comcast money now; they're there so that when in a couple years when 1TB isn't enough for the average consumer, they can rake in the overage fees. Put it in place now when a 1TB cap seems like a lot so that when in future its not, they can point and say, "Hey its been there the whole time, why is this a problem now?" and put that blame on consumers.
I'm just glad gigabit fiber is rolling out in my area right now, starting on the other side of town and working across to me ;D
I'll just sit over here w/ my $55/month 6Mb DSL 150GB cap and cry...
I remember Wendell saying awhile back that these companies are so big that they can't expand anymore and the only way to grow their profits is to raise rates and cut back services. Who needs a crystal ball when you have Wendell?:)
That is so unfortunate.... I am sorry for your pain. lol
as of right now it has:
64k dislikes
way to suck
Are you from Australia by any chance?
EDIT: If you were transferring data constantly for whole month at 6Mb/s you would reach 1944GB. But you can use only 150. That's terrible.
