Combining Toshiba N300s and X300s?

Hi,
I’m building a TrueNAS Core system and accidentally bought a mix of Toshiba N300s (2x) and X300s (3x). They’re all the same size (6TB) and buffer.

How important is it to have the enterprise N300s instead of the X300s? Can I combine them all into one Zpool, or should I return the X300s?

Thanks.

No relevance at all.

As far as ZFS is concerned, they are all 6TB drives. You could even mix different manufacturers if you want. Only metric being a) block device b) same size (for probably RAIDZ)

It will work but you might see performance penalties because the models might not share the same “performance profile”, in theory you might also end up with differences in available space but you should always “pad” arrays to avoid that issue further down the line if you need to replace a device.

What you might want to take into consider is that N300s comes with longer warranty and a much higher MTTF rating than X300.
