So I just bought a Cooler Master V8 CPU cooler. I really underestimated the sheer size of it and had to remove two side fans to fit into my case. So far it keeps my temps at around the same as my stock cooler with some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. In prime95, however, it only maxes out at 80c while my stock cooler would go past 100c. I have my i7-960 overclocked to 3.3ghz with the boost at 3.5ghz. I've read reviews that mention the fan going out after a while (which is not a big deal to me, I can just replace it with a noctua fan anyway) and others that mentioned motherboard warping. So in the end, was it really worth it?
Ah the CM V8 I remember it well. My brother underestimated the sheer size of the thing when he bought one it wouldn't even fit in his case. We cut a hole in the side so it had a 5mm gap around the cooler it looks pretty good as only the plastic top pokes through and the top of the fins are flush with the panel. Its a reasonable cooler though he's had it on a 6 core phenom II black at 4ghz for about 3 years now maybe more and no problem with board warping either just be very careful when moving your pc with it fitted.
If I recall correctly, that was designed in the era where dual-towers were starting to emerge, and, to safe costs, they put just a single fan in the middle. Similar designs from the era were the Arctic Cooling Xtreme Freezer, and the Coolink Corator DS. Not enough air was being moved, which is why other companies started adding an addition fan to help push air through.
Anyway, the V8 is decent. Not as good as a "modern" dual-tower solution, though.
