Hi,
I am looking for a cloud sync solution which allows me to do what the ever so rubbish google backup and sync does as it’s going away in about 1/2 a year.
The main feature I need is, not 1 big folder on 1 drive where my stuff gets synced to, but the ability to select any folder on any drive and that will sync. If I delete a file, it gets deleted from the sync / backup service and visa versa.
I tried dropbox, but for some reason it can’t see anything other than my C drive.
OneDrive as far as I can tell is just dump everything into that 1 folder.
If there is one out there that can ignore folders like .gitignore for node_modules, that would be even more awesome…
I got about 175GB to sync from specific folders between 4 different drives and various folders (resources, work, samples, software etc).
I have no interest in backups, the sync will be the backup and the OS well, if that crashes and burns I will just install it again and the software I use (computer always feels better after a good format).
Anyone got any good suggestions?
Thanks
Hey! I totally get your frustration with cloud sync solutions. It sounds like you need something more flexible than what Google Backup and Sync or OneDrive offers.
Have you considered TeraBox? It allows you to select specific folders across different drives to sync, so you won’t be limited to just one big folder. Plus, it has features that can help with syncing and deleting files across devices seamlessly.
If you’re looking for even more functionality, you might want to check out https://teraboxproapks.com
. It unlocks extra features that could really enhance your syncing experience.
Let me know if you try it out or if you have any other questions! Good luck!
Hi,
Thanks for the tip, I wrote that post back in 2021, but it’s still pretty relevant as Google Drive, One Drive and DropBox still suck to this very day (2024).
I did however stumble upon pCloud, they are far from perfect, but they do offer me the ability to sync any folder at any location to wherever I want on a folder structure I create on their servers, with the ability to configure ignore lists for files and folders (not quite as powerful as .gitignore), with the ability to browse your space as a virtual drive once their software is installed. So I now own 12TB lifetime with them.
I’ve never heard of TeraBox, but I did find another called Sync, but not the flexibility.
My review of pCloud:
- Pay once own forever (+1)
- Slow servers (-1)
- Extremely slow re-sync after machine format and/or retrieving data, the download of the files can often be a decent speed but the syncing of the file allocation table, dir list or whatever they may call it is abysmal and can take days if you got many millions of files like I do before the actual file downloads start (-3)
- They advertise on shared links you give out on paid accounts making them and you look like a cheap SOB to clients (-1)
- Sharing features have not been thought out very well, but at least they exist in the most basic way as possible (+1 -1)
- Sync filtering for files and folders, not quite .gitignore but it’s better than the rest (+1)
- Virtual local drive of the online server becomes available (+1)
- It’s doing a sync, what’s it doing right now? You will never know as there’s no way to find out (-1)
- It put green or blue dot icons on everything, synced and not synced (+1)
- upload speeds can vary a lot (+1 -1)
- pricing is BS, they are always on sale and it’s not cheap but if you can go for lifetime then it may be worth it some day (+1)
- encrypted vault which you have to pay for (+1 -1)
PS: If you use SyncBakPro you can do things far better than their own software can provide, till they screw up the ability for it to integrate. Or you can try using SyncBakPro to a single folder which defeats the purpose and sync that folder.
But given the choice between Google Drive, One Drive and DropBox, they are the lesser of 3 evils.
