Closing a steam game causes linux mint to freeze up

Ok. first off if this is in the wrong category feel free to move it.

So… I’ve beed fighting with an issue with steam and linux. It started about a month ago when I exited fallout 76 that about a minute later linux freezes up. I mean no mouse movement / no keyboard commands / video playback stops / audio still plays for another 30 seconds or so then eventually stops.

Now the problem persists even thru a reboot after exiting fallout 76 and just today a second game has started showing the same problem solitaire knights. The second game just started showing this problem after an update to the game.

I’m currently running linux mint 21.3 that’s been fully patched and was just recently reinstalled (fresh install) from me trying to get linux mint 22 installed.

I could use some help in troubleshooting this issue if it’s possible. Please be patient with me as I’m at the beginning stages of learning inux so I won’t know all the commands to get the information output you fine folks are going to ask of me.

Thanks in advance!

Can you check linux mint system reports and paste what it’s showing in there?

Also could you please post your system specs as well? There are known issues with intel 13th and 14th generation processors, though, this is the first I’ve heard of it causing the OS to freeze.

edit: Nearly forgot. You can do this if your OS freezes: ctrl+alt+backspace or press and hold alt key while entering this sequence: prtscn r e i s u b

System specs are:

Mobo: asus x570-e gaming
CPU: Amd ryzen 9 3900x
memory: 32gb ddr4 at 3600mt
2* 512gb m.2 drives
3* 1tb sata ssd drives
2* 2 tbsata ssd drives

Here is what I can post of the system log:

I’m pretty sure it’s the Nvidia GPU driver is causing the problem.

First thing I’d do is update your BIOS to the latest version. Sometimes it can cause these problems. Then test out your games.

If crashes continue I’d do full reinstall of the driver and update the OS. Retest and fingers crossed that fixes it.

However, Nvidia generally does not play nicely with Linux from my experience.

Edit: Also would not hurt reseating the GPU and making sure everything is plugged in properly.

Checked my bios level and it’s current.
The fresh install of the os and drivers just happened yesterday, I will try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver to see if that helps at all.

The reseating of the gpu will take a bit of doing. Need to get some canned air, because if i’m going to dismantle my system for a reseat of a card I might as well do everything else as well while the system is down!

These are all second and third order issues to try, start with rolling back your kernel (you should have older ones in GRUB, the splash screen as you furst boot up). If that doesn’t work try older or newer nvidia drivers. Nvidia has a lot of buggy drivers right now so you might want to roll back to 535 or earlier and/or try the latest beta driver.

If none of that works then you can start considering hardware issues and remedies, but 99% of the time its a package / driver issue.

Since it only happens when closing a game I’d lean towards software issue but anything is possible and start with the common / easy fixes first (e.g. kernel and drivers).

edit: actually since its a new install you may not have older kernels installed, but you should be able to install them via your package manager. If thats the case just start with different drivers.

The nvidia driver reinstall has passed the initial game test. Will have to test more to see if it’s stable.

Nvidia latest recommended drivers are 535 and what i reinstalled. Driver version 545 has never installed. always given an error when installing.

Thank you for the help!
