HI there I recently built a system for video editing and motion graphics work, about 2 months ago now. Today while under stress from a heavy render I heard a clicking sound. I tried to get close to see where it was coming from but I couldn’t pinpoint it. It sound like it’s coming form the GPU but might be the something else. I put my phone into the case and recorded the sound. When not under load the sound is not present but when under load it is. I also tested just setting the case fans to max to see if the noise came back but it didn’t but hen when under full load it does come back. Any thoughts? I will attach to recordings one with the click an done at idle with just fans.
Is this normal?
I have been working off laptops for ages and this was my 1st build in years.
Any info would be appreciated.

From how it sounds and the fact that you described that it sounds like it’s coming from the gpu, it could be coil whine? Like it could be doing 3d acceleration for processing the current frame, and then offloading to the encoder, waiting for that to finish, and then processing the next frame. Idk anything about your workflow (what software you’re using, what exactly you’re doing, if you’re doing effects that would be handled by the cpu, etc). I’m not saying that this is 100% the case, but it’s a possibility.
Coil whine is unfortunately pretty common on high performance gpus like the 4090, but on the plus side, isn’t something that affects functionality. If you wanna hear how loud coil whine can get, load up 3DMark Ice Storm and hear your graphics card buzz away as it processes many thousands of frames per second lol. I remember my GTX 970 getting like… surprisingly loud running that benchmark.

Hey there, thanks so much for your input I really appreciate it. I was doing some intensive 4K up-scaling with an AI video app that does make use the GPU so that sounds about right. I’ll look into 3DMark Ice Storm and do some tests.
I haven’t had a desktop for ages so it’s all quite new to me, but having this machine has really been amazing in terms of productivity and lowering my stress levels, really really happy with it.
