Chillstep?

So I've been really picky about my Dubstep in the past.  Honestly, Skrillex was all I really cared for.  For some reason everything else sounds like crap to me.

Anyway, I just came across this track/artist today and I FREAKING LOVE IT!!  It weirdly reminds me of classic games on the SNES and Genesis, yet it's extremely relaxing to listen to.  Does anyone else enjoy some Chillstep from time to time?

No joke I came home extremely ticked off today, found this, and now I'm happy as can be.

chillstep is my favourite kind of dubstep. If you like hard dubstep like skrillex you should check out some hardstyle and jumpstyle songs

This is one of the strangest pieces of advice I've heard in a while. If you like "hard dubstep like Skrillex" go listen to two totally different genres.. Doi?

I'm one of those fella's that gets really pissed of when people refer to Skrillex as being Dubstep. Dubstep started out as a mixture between 2-step Garage and Dub music (which is in itself a subgenre of Raggae). Early heroes of the genre are the likes of Benga, Skream, Caspa, Rusko, the DMZ folks. Listen to these artists and then try to tell me that skrillex actually belongsm to the same genre. Just for some chucks and giggles listen to any Skrillex song and compare it to the following:

Dubstep anno 2006

Which by 2008 had turned into

By this time the genre was probably at it's peak, for me personally summarized by Benga's "Diary of an Afro Warrior" (Still a great album IMO) Also, this:

The years following this the genre diversified into several different genre's, leaving a major mark on ather fields of electronic music and even pop music (WTF?!) This is were Skrillex came to the stage in about 2010, popularizing a kind of music that was influenced by Dubstep, but probably equally by Electro, House, Techno and a few other genres.

Dubstep went on to be what it had been but it also spawned new subgenre's such as "Trap" "Future Dub/ Future garage" and the like. A personal favorite of mine at the moment is this:

I'm sorry for trying to force my opinion down your throat, but calling Skrillex Dubstep is like comparing Elvis Presley to Nickelback and claiming Nickelback invented rock n' roll music.

Haha I think I just needed a forum to state my opinion, hope you like the music I posted tho.

Excilent post HENN3H!

going to dig out my Digital Mystikz!

awesome post, anyone here heard of modestep?

I hate to argue with you, but skrillex does make dubstep music alongside a few other sub genres, your arguement is good and don't get me wrong it's just the premise i disagree with.

your baisicly arguing the difference between mature cheddar and light cheddar cheese, they're both cheese and they are both a type of cheddar. but it seems like your trying to say one type of cheeder is more deserving of its dirivitive than the other just because it tastes stronger than the other and it was here first. it just seems a bit of a pureist perspective. if you think im not right check out adoseofbuckly-dubstep on youtube. actualy either way check it out, it's a good and worth while watch.

You're right about me putting forward a really purist perspective. But I think it's a valuable argument to make in this case.

Somehow it seems the terms "Skrillex" and "Dubstep" have become synonymous terms in the minds of many people (you might have noticed this). This bothers me a bit. Does this make me a purist? Why yes it certainly does. But does me being a purist render my argument invalid? I'd say no.

I'm probably being a dick about this, but I just want people to know that there is a dissonance between how Dubstep is perceived and what it actually is. Simply put Dubstep is much much much more than what Skrillex and the commercialization of the genre have made it look like over the past couple of years. And seeing as i love the genre as a whole, I think that's something worth pointing out.

yeah i get what your saying, skrillex does not define the being and essence of dubstep. it's just the impression skrillex can project to potential new comers of the genre through the mainstream median, that can lead to the assumption that the rest of the genre is pretty much the same, which is far from the truth as it's actually far more diverse and uniquely developed in different way's far from it's origins like skrilex has. and admittidly this misconception does seem more prominent in the electronic median as whole throughout history, than say indie/rock/metal/jazz etc etc.

It's like when pendulam brought drum and bass in to the mainstream or prodigy with brake-beat D&B or even scooter in the ninties with dance/happy hardcore (i think that was the genres) or david guetta with house in the eighties but none of em are the original inovators, but all of them are still alright artists, that's just there approach to the genres (who also got a larger share of the starlight than most)

unfortunately in some way's the mainstream of music is what has drawn many to a new genre, but it is also a gateway to see what else is out there for the newcomers. but for people like you and me, we need to keep an open mind to all this as it's easier to put across a rational point and direct other's to what else is out there just so they can see that theese stereo-types are not so.

ultimately pureism has a place even in music, it's just worth chalenging your own view's and how you percieve them to make sure they are integraly sound and contempory to the subject's context and meaning, as it can be a bit too easy at times to get caught up in the passion of your own views and even allow that too close you off from prospect of enjoying the music in this case. i should know iv done it lol

Haha, could've been talking to myself here! this sounds all too familiar. I really agree with you when it comes to the narrowmindedness of purism, but am glad to see you see my point as well.

The Buckley video's you recommended were really good btw (and awkwardly true in my case)!

idk if quite chillstep but close enough

Love this song

on the ''like this try this different genre'' harstyle is hard electro music...the ''dubstep'' skrillex produces is hard electro too, i just thought it was worth saying.

thanks man, like yourself i pride myself on being a bit of a music buff, so i can definitely apreciate why your passionate about your subject and how your views hold water.

as for buckley yeah iv had a few rhetorical slaps round the face from him lol (worth it though)

This one's a real banger.

Personally I never listen to dubstep, however proper ambient tracks like this one is the only exception.

The 3:30 annihilates any other liquid dubstep/DnB I've ever heard.

yes excellent post. I just got a good education lesson. It's nice to see others be passionate about a genre.
