Ces am5

Do you think that we’ll see more am5 boards for CES 2023, or are just stuck with what we have currently on the market? What does the typical release cycle look like?

I doubt we’ll see new boards. I expect new Zen4 SKUs though, like 5800x or X3D variants for existing CPUs. New boards will likely come with the new generation (x770?) which won’t be announced at CES I think.

They might showcase existing AM5 boards with PCIe 5.0 SSD and new RDNA3 cards

Yes, I think mobo mfrs have their hands full tuning their existing boards to meet the specs (e.g. in regards to memory support).

Hopefully they didn’t wait to assess the outcome of this holiday season for indications of market demand. Otherwise we’re in for a long haul until the announcement of new boards.

In case they did, I made sure to spend on AM4, which at this point has much higher utility to me than any PCIe5 stuff (both Intel and AMD).
I hope/expect that to change, but not in the short run.

Would be nice to see new am5 boards but i doubt it.
I’m kinda disappointed about the skimp on sata ports really.

Like most people say here, not very likely. Though I’d love some more ITX options right now myself - there are only a handful of those and they all cost above $300 for now…

SATA is rapidly being phased out in favor of making space for more m.2. You got a problem with that, just buy one of these:

Most motherboards need to make the tradeoff m.2 OR SATA anyway. This just makes the tradeoff visible.

The thing is that with the current prices of am5 boards they basically could give people options.
The Asrock X670e Taichi is a nice example of how it should be.
However yeah that board is ridiculously expensive.
There are a few boards with 6 sata ports which is nice already.
However those are also pretty expensive.

Of course it is just my opinion.

But sata is still more flexible for additional storage then m.2.
The speed advantage for m.2 nvme is of course obvious and for an OS drive a great solution.

Oh, I agree. With these prices they could easily include one or two breakout boards that cost $15-$20 to make.

Though, to be fair, a lot of the reason prices are these high is the freight costs. First by air, then by ship - though a lot of global shipping is being cancelled now.

We need to start manufacturing things locally to get prices down again. If TSMC/GloFo/Samsung are smart they will start building factories in US and EU as well as China, because global shipping routes are breaking down for years if not decades.

Yeah well the board prices will eventually drop i suppose.
Am5 is a new platform for AMD of course.
On the intel side of things the boards look a little bit more balanced if you will.
However in regards to a complete platform upgrade the additional cost,
for just the motherboard alone between Intel and AMD is basically marginal.

Would be nice to see more boards next year but like i said that is kinda doubtful.

However on the other side of things spending a little bit more on the motherboard,
and stick with it for a couple of generations of cpu´s is not a bad idea either.
assuming that AMD will support the AM5 platform for a few generations.
That would make the board more cost effective in the long run.
