Cat 5e Vs Cat 6 Vs Cat 6a

Yeah, sorry - definitely, OM4 multi-mode. For home, single mode will send you broke

Brain fart… had single mode on the brain (at work, longer larger campus runs :D)

Will edit the original post.

No, it does not. If you’re under 100m runs (and if your house is larger than that, you can afford whatever :D), definitely run MULTI-MODE.

Multimode will do up to 300m but speed drops off at that point i think. Maybe shorter, depending on just how fast you’re trying to push it.

SINGLE mode will do 1.5km or more (with the cheapest SFPs) - up to 50-60+ km last i checked with the more expensive SFPs. Basically single mode SFPs are laser, multimode are LED (much cheaper). You’re looking at 5-10x(!) the cost for single mode optics though, depending on vendor.

We run both here, multimode in the datacentre, single mode on remote sites (where runs are several hundred metres between buildings).

I like the idea of fibre but it is just too expensive. I am just going to go with a single router and cat 6a. Thanks for your replys
