Card seems to become less stable when I add higher power limits

Hi I have a saphire 7970 and am having a hard time overclocking because when i put the power past about +15 any clock past 1050 become as very unstable (crashes within seconds of starting a stress test with Msi kombustor) also thougt I might add that with a 1050mhz overclock I hit 63c after 5 mins at full load. Please give me some suggestion as to what to do

have you changed the core voltage at all or are you just using the power limiter ?

oh and what PSU do you have

Stock voltage, 850w 80plus silver also have a 3770k @4.2 if that helps

Im suprised you even got that high on stock voltage, so heres how id do it

bring your power limit all the way up to 20 and start running something like furmark (Kumbustor will work)

increase clocks until you get artifacts and then bump the voltage by incriments (i go 0.010 Volts at a time) until no more artifacts

raise clocks again until artifacts/anything else it will do like a driver crash ect. you may want to add an extra .010 to .020V before doing this or itll be pretty slow and tedious

do this until you reach your confidence limit, the voltage limit, or its OC limit  (no matter what you do there are artifacts/crashes)

then back the clocks down (20Mhz) and maybe voltage down a little just to be safe (only if voltage is at or near cards limit) Oh and you should try and not let the GPU get over 80c as your getting pretty close to its temp limits, watch your VRM temp in Gpu-Z too, dont let it go past 100c to be safe (prefered under 90c)

Have Fun Oc'ing

Much appreciated! I dont plan on doing anything to crazy I wont go more that 75c Core temps
