Card for 4k Productivity, general use, video/photo editing

Okay so I just built a new PC for work, and decided to throw a 970 in it although its overkill, I'm going to put it in my Home rig and grab something like a 760 for work will a 760 push 4k ? or should I go amd? any recommendation for a card under £200 that will push 4k for someone doing everything but gaming?

AMD cards do much better at 4K than nVidias. An R9 290 will be faster than a 970/980 at 4K generally. 

That is gaming though. For productivity though any card can drive a display at 4K. Depends on what you do for productivity. Do you use CUDA or OpenCL? If you use OpenCL then go AMD. nVidia for CUDA of course.

tbh I'm in the deep end running the whole web based side of a letting company in London, I do anything I'm asked I'm not a coder or qualified at anything just well versed in the "internets" :D, so as for CUDA I guess there could be a benefit there as I use premier and ps. thanks Krieger, and no not planning on any 4k video editing.

 

I reckon I'll grab a 960 when they release.

Well i personaly think that GTX9xx series cards are not realy great for video rendering, Because simply Nvidia decided to cut massively in the amount of cuda cores on those cards. I think that the older 700 series might be better for that.

If you use rendering software which can utilize open CL, then i would recommend a R9-290X.

What software are you using to edit your 4k footage in, also can you describe your workflow? Sorry to be skeptical but it sounds like something other than the 970 is the issue here.

Misteyr Angel, one thing about the Cuda cores in the GTX 9-series: the Cuda cores are actually 50% more efficent than the GTX 7-series Cuda cores. If I calculate right: GTX 970: 1664, GTX 780: 2304. If we multiply by 50%, this gives us: 1664*1.5= 2496. In resume, The Cuda cores of the GTX 970 are better than the GTX 780. 

If you want to go with a Nvidia GPU and you can wait, you could get a GTX 960 since it is about 200$CA and its performance will be better than the gtx 770 and maybe than the r9 290.

Though, if you want to purely edit only, get an AMD GPU, they have better performance in rendering usually. Trust me, I have a very long list of GPUs I have.

Its not only about sheer cuda strength, there is also a "bottleneck" in the v-ram bit rate. The 256 bit bus is being found to limit the cards in rendering so that they are actually slower then the 700 series. 

You are actually right: I actually invited my friend Tommy about an hour ago, so we could play together and test our gaming rigs in various tasks he had an 780 while I had a GTX 970. We both tested in gaming: GTX 970 was the clear winner even if we didn't have the same processors(I had an i5 4690 while he had the K version Oced to 4 GHZ) Though in video rendering, he won. Using only the GPU and the same amount of RAM,  in LightWorks, he got an about 15 percent win in half situations(5 to 20 in other situations). Say, you were right!

 

Very good information! I guess we all should eagerly await the 980ti to truly experience the unleashing of the Maxwell architecture (although I've heard AMD-based rendering is improving greatly and rapidly :)

Or maybe wait for the r9 390x unleash experience(I hope it will not fail like the game *Sonic Unleashed* LOL). Or maybe wait for the GTX 960 for affordability and for the environment(100W)

I'm currently building a powerful system for someone to enjoy, but the nature has to love it( i5-4590(84W, *GTX 960*(100W), 8GB RAM, a 256 GB SSD, Micro-ATX motherboard and a ATX Mid Tower for good airflow, and a 350W power supply).

i suppose that story of more efficient only counts wenn gaming, not cuda rendering, Because the GTX9xx series have more limitations then just less cuda cores indeed. But i could be wrong offcourse ☺

Still i think if you realy do allot of video rendering, a decent cpu would make more sense.

correct me if I'm wrong but in rendering/edit you'll want double precision compute much more and on Nvidia card you will be paying a little bit more of a premium.
