Since most or all of the options for installing a 1 or 2 DIN Android computer in the car suck (Fake specs, wrong android versions, bad quality china units etc), is there a standard way to install some touch screen and attach a computer of choice, eg Raspberry pi to it? Or a custom made android unit. The only limiting factor that I can see is the screen itself, plus the amplifier for the audio system. However, making it modular means a lot of room for upgrades and improvement.
Do you have any ideas for standalone touch screens that fit on 2-DIN sockets, or can you suggest a complete unit that is reliable and is worth avoiding all the trouble for?
Who did this went through the process of making the whole thing fit in a 2 din space for a car. There’s also a follow up about it, how it works and so on.
Back in 2002 a friend fitted a Compaq PIII SFF system to the passenger seat of his van. He had an inverter to drive the PC and a GPS receiver fitted to the serial port and the other serial port fitted to a HAM radio sending digital data to a tracking server that supplied a website.
The end result of all this extreme ultra nerdieness was his wife could follow his progress throughout his work day. He gave me the URL and I was able to see him as a red dot on a map. I called it “Where’s Wally” (where’s Waldo).
His wife would phone him up and nag him because he was not where he was supposed to be. He got smart and set the software to offset his position by 50 miles. This did not help marital relations and eventually lead to their divorce.
